  • Apple Watch experience - a bit painful
    W willichan

raddevus wrote: After 10 years of using an Android phone, my family finally convinced (coerced?) me into buying an iphone. I got the iPhone 13 basic. My wife and daughter got iPhones a couple of years back. My daughter got the watch last year, and my wife just got one for Mother's Day this year. They have been trying to convince me to change ever since they got their phones. I think they just want me on one so I can support them. Every time they need help, my answer is always, "I don't know, but on my Android, I just ..." (They hate that. [Evil Grin] ) Now they have convinced my older son to switch over. The three of them like showing us how they can use their watches like mini walkie-talkies. I keep telling them that I am happy with my Android. When I asked my younger son if he wanted to get an iPhone and watch too, he just said, "I like my Android. Besides, I really don't want to have Mom constantly trying to talk to me through my watch." The coercions continue, but I think my son and I will hold out fine. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

I find that this is often a power issue. Older laptops will always have their limits, but I have got around this on many laptops and docking stations by replacing the power supply with a higher wattage one. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

You can get more granular control over text size using "Ease of Access" settings. WIN + I to open the Windows Settings screen. Then click on "Ease of Access". You can use the slider at the Top of the window to increase size in 1% increments up to 225%, with sample text showing what the text will look like. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

  • What's the worst computer chassis hack you've done?
    W willichan

My first hack was in my college years, back when a "laptop computer" was the size and weight of a typewriter (and kept your lap PLENTY warm), I bolted a steamer chest handle to the top of my mini-tower, and an eye-bolt to the back. I then fashioned an old strap with clip-hooks (think old-style carabiner clips before carabiners were known to anyone but climbers) on the ends. This was my daily setup for going from home to school to the office and back again. I got lots of interested looks on the bus. My second hack was back when my kids were starting grade school and learning more about the internet than Dad was showing them, I gathered scrap components from various dead machines, and built my first home firewall on a piece of cardboard that I mounted on the wall behind my desk. Never worried about overheating. My wife even thought it was a fun conversation piece when friends would come over, even though she knew nothing about computers, and could barely use the one I gave her. I have done several hacks since then, but they have been less and less original. I did once mod a 5 1/4" floppy case to fit into a drive bay, and used it as a drawer to keep all my license fobs in. • Should all responses to stupid questions be lmgtfy?
    W willichan

I can't agree enough on this. Anyone can go to Google, but not everyone can figure out what keywords to use, or how to filter through the good results from the krappy ones. From there, you still need to figure out how to apply what you found to your own situation. Not everyone is able to do that. Even after Google, they will still need help. To this day, the best compliment I have ever received in my career came back when I was in my twenties, and trying to break out of the low level job market. I sat next to another applicant waiting for my interview, and got a peek at his resume. This guy had the education and the experience to outdo me 10x over, but I was the one offered the job. When I asked my new manager how I got picked over the other guy, he gave me the perfect answer. "He knows everything we need him to know, and can do everything we need him to be able to do ... now. In the future, if there are any new changes, he will be stuck. You, on the other hand, only know half of what we need. But if something is needed, you'll know how to find out." Thirty years later in my career, and I still consider that the best thing anyone has said to me professionally. I've been the guy struggling to figure something out, without having anyone there to help me out. I didn't like it. I've seen people struggling to figure something out. If I am able to give a clue or a hint, I'm not going to leave them hanging. In my opinion, (please note that this statement is not directed at anyone in particular) "just Google it" or "RTFM" are answers given by people who should not have bothered to post an answer to begin with, since as answers go, they are less helpful than not answering at all. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

  • Do you OneNote?
    W willichan

I have seen other people using it very well. (or at least, it looks to me like they are) I even attended classes on using OneNote. I have tried on multiple occasions to make use of it, but it always ends up looking like a digital version of that one, single file drawer; full of all kinds of info that I think is either useful, or may be in the future. None of it really fitting together well enough to make up a combined file, so everything is either a folder with one piece of paper in it, or a stack of random papers crammed between two folders. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.

    The Lounge question

  • I don't know what to do
    W willichan

I get your position. For me it isn't really about getting myself promoted, as much as it is setting my own attitude and mindset around my work. I have had good bosses, and I have had bosses that were horrible SOBs that were difficult to work with. Setting my own attitude to one of "I'm going to make you look so good that you will be promoted out of here" helped me to keep my thinking on maintaining the quality of my work (and teamwork), as opposed to the letting my own quality slide while blaming it on him. In one case, my boss picked up on the fact that I was not looking for ways to trip him up, but was picking up where he dropped the ball. He admitted to me at lunch one day that his promotion to that position caught him off guard. He never pictured himself in that job, and felt himself inadequate, and trapped in his position. He still wasn't a good boss, but at least he made more effort to be one. ---------- Money makes the world go round ... but documentation moves the money.
