Unless you have a hardware solution and drivers that supports this, there's no way to tell the difference. Not even at a low level with a mouse hook. A guide to posting questions on CodeProject[^] Dave Kreskowiak Microsoft MVP Visual Developer - Visual Basic      2006, 2007

Did you defragment it or did you DEFRAGMENT it? Ever since Windows Defrag ruined one of my disks I have been using O&O Defrag, which works a LOT faster (2 hours for a 80 GB partition on a SATA disk, filled with 79 GB of data) and does much better optimation. Get a trial version of O&O Defrag (which is the only defragger I can recommend, sorry) and defrag your disk, THEN try again. Also, you might want to create an image of your disk with a working, freshly installed Windows on it, so that you can get back to the "fast" state easily. The German tool seems nice, but im looking more for bad sector detection, and i have some hard drives which im extremly sure are bad, but so far all programs that just read havent detected any faults. The hard drive tool from UBCD is good too, but it only scanned. I wonder if there are any ones that really read, write, compare and stuff.. //Johannes

sfrigio wrote: How to retrieve the serial number of a usb pen drive ? You've made the classic mistake of assuming that there is one. Most don't expose one. What you want isn't really possible. Media is media, be it magnetic, reflective, or silcon. The only way you're going to prevent unauthorized USE (you cannot prevent unauthorized copying!) is to use a hardware key dedicated to the purpose of protection. The USB drive is NOT that piece of hardware. A guide to posting questions on CodeProject[^] Dave Kreskowiak Microsoft MVP Visual Developer - Visual Basic      2006, 2007

Well, if my hard disk conks out, I simply have to buy a new one and restore all project data from my backup hard disk. I think, a RAID system only has to guarantee an absoluteley uninterrupted service - normally required at web/file servers. But this doesn't supersede or even matches my backup necessities. So, I personally never used a RAID system and actually never missed it, too. ... Hope, I'm not on the wrong track! :-D

You can buy an additional IDE controller card. SATA is also available, but make sure you can get Win 2K drivers for the card before buying one. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | PimpFish | CP SearchBar v3.0 | C++ Forum FAQ Dunder-Mifflin, this is Pam.

DavidCrow wrote: Is this possible Absolutely, providing the motherboard supports the new processor correctly. DavidCrow wrote: would it require a format of the HD? As long as nothing else changed, this "should" not be necessary. It is always prudent to back up before a major change of any hardware. With my home computer, which was one of the first dual cores and getting old now, the chip was late so they gave me a single core with the new board and promised me full credit on the X2 when they got it. When the dual core was available, we dropped it in, booted and it of course ignored the core, updated the bios and then it was fine and dandy, no OS change, no reformat. :) _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. With the correct bit throttling diode, that's not a problem. The bits with then recognize and slow down for turns so they don't jump from wire-to-wire (this is the primary cause of bandwidth collisions). :) "Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997 ----- "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

I'd try using a product by Lavalys called Everest. It seems to tell you a lot more than you might be able to find on your own. I always have a copy handy (engineers license). code-frog wrote: I bet you have bad memory. It is a possibility that the onboard video memory may be bad, but it does register it (displays the correct amount :~ ), the memory information on startup. As far as my system mem goes I have 3 GB and have even done memory diagnostics and found that all is well there. Is there a way to actually test the video card's memory? Such as a software tool that runs a video mem diagnostic, I just have not found one? Any further help here is most definitely appreciated, and I will listen to anyone who has knowledge about troubleshooting this problem.
