Ouch. I've been copying CDs to tape (for playing in the car), and LPs to tape and CD (for playing... anywhere, since i don't have a turntable anymore) for years, and wouldn't have guessed that it was illegal. Just think - if it wasn't for this noble organization, i might have gone my whole life not realizing what a lawbreaker i am...

Actually, it says 'not necessarily'. As far as I can see, the position has not changed since it wasn't legal for me to copy LPs to a cassette for my walkman. The difference, of course, is that every blank tape I bought gave money to the record company anyhow. But then, I used to use the same tapes over and over... Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

I have been saying that all along. I think they have stock in headphone companies and are going to start making everyone listen to music through headphones. Speakers will be outlawed because they are clearly a violation of copyright due to their unlicensed broadcast nature :)

lol. that's funny, but since it would be a transformative, parody work, it would be protected under copyright fair use.

Chris is just being dramatically bitter. Next he'll post something that casts doubt on the abilities of our free market economy to self-regulate and ultimately improve the lives of you and i via pure economic forces. He may even go so far as to dispute the intrinsic freedom and fairness of our markets. Of course, these are just the feverish ramblings of his addled mind, tormented day and night by his black, hate-filled heart. What if I make my own CD eventually, from my own music... do I have to ask permission of myself? Do I have to put it in writing in order to prove I gave myself permission to copy my own music? I am not surprised actually.... disappointed, but not surprised. It is always better for any company to sell the same song a half-dozen times, once in CD format, once in MP3, once in AAC, once in MP4, etc. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. as i understand it, the basic definition of "fair use" is still pretty much the same as it's always been. so, in that sense, you're 100% correct. but media companies are doing their best to chip away at what we're legally allowed to do with those fair use rights - for one example, we have the right to use small samples of works in our own stuff. but the media companies are trying desperately to make it legally impossible for us to actually obtain those samples by wrapping them in DRM schemes that you can't legally break. it's like being legally able to take a drug that's becoming absolutely illegal to buy, sell or distribute - eventualyl it's not much of a right. and Congress is not on our side.
