I have recently bought an Xda Exec Pocket PC[^] and I am looking for a bluetooth GPS device to link to it. Actually, my main reason for purchasing a GPS device is to take part in the Open Street Map[^] project. So, does anyone have any good suggestions? I don't need anything fancy, nor do I need the expense of built in maps (that's why I want to take part in the Open Street Map project, so there can be a free map data set built up that won't cost a fortune for people to buy.) ColinMackay.net Scottish Developers are looking for speakers for user group sessions over the next few months. Do you want to know more?

I saw a GPS receiver at CompUSA a few weeks ago. I think it cost about $50 or $80 (US). I can't remember the name or brand, but it was in the case with the other GPS setups, like Garmin and Magellan. I have worked with GPS apps in the past and was looking for a combination of GPS receiver (to receive the NMEA sentences from the satellites), a mapping app (to figure out where the NMEA sentences tell me I am located/going), and my laptop (to run the app on and plug the GPS receiver into).

Frankly, just look for anything that's using the SiRF Star III chipset. We're evaluating an APOS-TEC GPS-626[^] unit for a customer. This is quite happy to get a GPS lock several metres inside the building; an older generation Socket/Emtac CruxII unit only gets a lock placed right on the window ledge, and not a particularly good one either. I think we got this from Expansys. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
