Not that I agree with it, but it's for the annual seal hunt. These aren't people amusing themselves on the weekend.

I hope so. Anyway, there are lots of ways to kill animals without make them suffer. For example the way that's used for cows (a nail in the skull -> istantaneous death). So, what is the seal's leather used for? Coats? :~ ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA]

It's the annual seal harvest. We wouldn't be doing it if there wasn't an international demand for seal products. Personally, I am totally opposed to it. I think it's cruel and unnecessary. But somebody somewhere is creating a market for demand so it will continue until it is no longer profitable. The main market is for furs. Largest importers are Norway, Germany, Greenland, and China. Other importing countries include Finland, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Greece, South Korea, and Russia. So you can see the problem in stopping it. Bash Canada, sure. The men doing it live in very poor northern communities. The hunt is a source of income to a depressed area. If it's going to stop, then international demand has to stop. The demand is purely vanity driven. BTW: It's not just Canada. Other nations include: Norway, Greenland, Russia and Namibia.

Aren't they exporters of seal stuff!? They kill seals just like these Canadians.

Why not at least make it so that the seals are put to rest peacefully?

What other method do you suggest? Shooting them is not as effective for the same reasons that slaughterhouses do not use bullets to kill cows. Blunt force trauma to the head is the most effective method.

Actually, I disagree with that, even though I am opposed to the hunt. They are poor fisherman with no other source of income. The population of seals is in the range of 5 million+ and threatens some of the fishery stocks as well. The official government statement can be found here: Seal hunt[^].

That's not my point. The point was they are weak men to resort to such brutality. It's about having standards and some lines you don't cross just because you're poor. Jeremy Falcon

Yeah, it's not pretty, but it's driven by an international demand for the fur. Mostly for use in fashion. Better to blame the people who create the market for the fur than the people doing the killing. No demand, no hunt.

In this regard, Canada and Norway are very similar. :sigh: I can understand that the northern communities need to earn money some way, but do they have to be so friggin brutal!? There's gotta be less medieval ways of killing a seal.

Apparently not. They do the same to cows in a slaughterhouse. According to research it is the most effective way and more efficient than a bullet. :sigh:

That is essentially what they are trying to accomplish with the picks.

Oh, I agree. But a family to feed and the desire for money is a strong incentive.

It is. I've seen many other videos with other animals (even dogs), used for coats. All of them beaten like them and de-skinned (don't know the word) alive. Many of them are still alive when the "operators" throw them in the rubbish. They keep trying to escape, all of them without legs. Here is another "movie": fur[^] ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA]

Yes, Norway exports also. But if you read the Canadian government reports, we also export to Norway.

Meh. You should see what happens to cute, fluffy bunnies when they get in the way of a haybine. :|

I think you mean, you hate the seal hunt. Guess what? Lots of other people do, too. But lots of other people also reap a benefit from it, so it is not going to go away, anytime soon. Yup, the pictures of blood spattered snow and animals can be pretty revolting. So don't friggen look at them, then. You get no sympathy from me on this one. For all the things that people do in the world that should be stopped, I'd be very surprised if this ever made a top ten or top fifty list. Chris Meech I am Canadian. Intentional or not, there is lots of cruelty that goes on in this world. I think we'd be better off working on the human to human cruely part of life and fixing that before we start arguing over what human to animal cruelty is considered acceptable.
