They don't use hands and brute force a lot in the armed forces these days though. They use guns and bombs, the use of which does not really need a lot of physical strength. Regards, Nish

There are extrodinaries in every field. but when you take up things physically, women cannot stand up to the competion. they may be a good groin-kickers, but can you cannot say they'll beat all guys around. and who's your master ? is he a Guy or a Lady? and why we don't find a woman version of bruce lee or chuck?

Yeah. Some people look down on Israel's mandatory conscription. I see where that's coming from, it's understandable. They have at least, as I understand it, lowered the number of mandatory years one must serve. In any case, one has to realize Israel is quite a different situation than Europe or the United States. Israel is attacked on an almost weekly basis by Islamic suicide bombers. It is surrounded by 23 Arab nations, most of which are fundamentalist Islamic theocracies and therefore hostile to Israel. We've been invaded on several occassions by multiple nations simultaneously; given that our land is relatively tiny, we have to be ready for defense at any moment. I don't know if that is enough to warrant mandatory conscription, but it certainly requires a well-trained military on constant alert, to say the least. That is critical to the preservation of the state itself. I should add the disclaimer that I'm a bit biased; my younger brother will be joining the Israeli Defense Forces this summer.

Where is the correlation between Rabbi's (Religious) and conscription (Government mandated) There are few female rabbis because all but the progressive sects do not allow it.

My view is like they are intellectually on par with men, or even better. So they'll better suit for controlling UAVs :). I dont tell this with a discriminatory sense, but I feel they dont need this physical strain and that too when we have enough men in the armed forces. and moreover I take a typical Indian women as an example.

The soldier is often caught in a transient moment of self-reflection, uncertainty, a break from her daily reality, as if questioning her own identity and state of contradiction. I agree with Nish there. Right from childhood, if girls are trained to be physically strong [and if they don't have the social pressure to maintain soft muscles just as a mark of feminity], they'd be physically as good as men too. In fact, in Indian villages, women do a lot of physical labor which make them very strong and healthy - women who carry water containers for kilometres, those who work in quarries carrying rocks, those who work in construction sites carrying 20 bricks or so on their head at a time. Most israelis ive known fall into 2 categories. 1) Do their time, and only their time, then get the hell out. It used to be the case that they had to do 1mnth per year as well as the 3 years at age 18 - this was viewed the same way... necessary evil 2) Leave the country/apply for exemption due to not wanting to be in the army at all. I have known exactly zero career IDF soldiers - but there must be some otherwise there would be no upper ranks.
There's another CPian here, Isaac...can't remember his last name, who just got out of the IDF. He said while he was burnt out at the end, it changed him in a positive way. Maybe he can fill you in more if he reads this.
