Israel's female soldiers

Where is the correlation between Rabbi's (Religious) and conscription (Government mandated) There are few female rabbis because all but the progressive sects do not allow it.

My view is like they are intellectually on par with men, or even better. So they'll better suit for controlling UAVs :). I dont tell this with a discriminatory sense, but I feel they dont need this physical strain and that too when we have enough men in the armed forces. and moreover I take a typical Indian women as an example.

Heck, no! Israel has a lot of Muslim Arabs living in it, though I don't know if they are citizens. In fact, if the current trend continues, in a few decades, Jews will be a minority in Israel. Cheers, Vikram.

I understood your point of view. But there'd be quite a few women out there, who'd disagree :-) But in general, the armed forces have been a male dominated area. Regards, Nish

Rather than portraying the soldier as heroic, confident, or proud, my images disclose a complexity of emotions. The soldier is often caught in a transient moment of self-reflection, uncertainty, a break from her daily reality, as if questioning her own identity and state of contradiction. She is a soldier in uniform but at the same time she is a teenage girl who is trying to negotiate between these two extreme dimensions.

When I got my first job 6 years ago, I spent a few weeks staying in a B&B until I found somewhere to rent. One morning I shared my breakfast table with a young lady from Israel who told me she had just finished her spell of national service working in a museum (as she hadn't wanted to do military service.) What I remember from what she said, whilst it is compulsory for everyone to do national service, there are far more options than just military service - a lot of options involved working for government agencies. -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Buzzwords!

I agree with Nish there. Right from childhood, if girls are trained to be physically strong [and if they don't have the social pressure to maintain soft muscles just as a mark of feminity], they'd be physically as good as men too. In fact, in Indian villages, women do a lot of physical labor which make them very strong and healthy - women who carry water containers for kilometres, those who work in quarries carrying rocks, those who work in construction sites carrying 20 bricks or so on their head at a time. I agree with Nish there. Most israelis ive known fall into 2 categories. 1) Do their time, and only their time, then get the hell out. It used to be the case that they had to do 1mnth per year as well as the 3 years at age 18 - this was viewed the same way... necessary evil 2) Leave the country/apply for exemption due to not wanting to be in the army at all. I have known exactly zero career IDF soldiers - but there must be some otherwise there would be no upper ranks.
There's another CPian here, Isaac...can't remember his last name, who just got out of the IDF. He said while he was burnt out at the end, it changed him in a positive way. Maybe he can fill you in more if he reads this.

Generally speaking, I think there's honor serving your country. Of course, it's not for everyone, so there are your bad apples that hate it, I'm sure. I don't know how the what percentage stays and makes a career out of it. I'd venture a guess it's not very high; it is a very dangerous, stressful profession. Especially in Israel. There's also been some unrest among the populace in Israel regarding the IDF; with the recent eviction of 9000 Jews from their homes in Gush Katif, the IDF was called in to enforce this government edict in order to transfer the land over as part of yet another land-for-peace deal with the opposition. Shortly after, there was a small group that called for a split from the government; the IDF had to step in and scatter the protest before it escalated, putting more ill feelings among the population towards the IDF and the government. Things are getting interesting in Israel, that's for sure.
