Seems like a lot of overhead for a calendar, news and stock ticker and a scratchpad (though I am really glad to see they have made the scratchpad save online so it works from any computer.) regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

I just updated the Google Desktop. I'm a bit dazed. A really cool personalized google page, gadgets on the desktop that are actually useful, and it seems like the architecture is such that other people besides Google can write personalized page gadgets. From my 10 minutes of test driving it, this blows away anything Microsoft is offering, both in terms of usability and extensibility. Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. Literally. Though I do prefer the way Microsoft and Yahoo! allow you to write gadgets in just simple old JavaScript/CSS/HTML. Google requires full blown EXEs and COM dangly bits. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

That's interesting. Sooo.... with JavaScript et al, I can see easily writing cross-platform gadgets. But with EXE's and COM, it seems rather platform specific. And security issues. Oh my. Microsoft Gadgets to a large degree work on the desktop or in a web-page with the same code. Something that I really liked. So you can have a Microsoft Gadget in your Vista sidebar and then that same Gadget in your Windows Live start web-page. Not sure this still works with Google Desktop but you can load any ActiveX control into the sidebar. Sometimes it falls over and dies as the control wasn't designed to be used that way but sometimes you get some cool functionality with existing code. I think there are merits to both systems. I'd like to see GD allowing a simpler JS/HTML/CSS model for simple gadgets while retaining the ability to load COM gadgets. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

I read headlines daily about Microsoft taking on Google, and I have to laugh; they're not even in the same ballpark. Microsoft is clueless when it comes to search technology. MSN, TechNet, MSDN - all fall far short of acceptable. Even Lycos is better at finding content on a Microsoft site than any of Microsoft's search tools, and Google is way beyond that level. Get a grip, Bill - you don't have to dominate everything to be supremely successful! Search isn't your forte; stick to what you do best, and do it better than anyone else. Windows still could use some work, and your developer tools have a lot of room for improvement. No one does them better, but you still can make improvements. Devote your vast resources to things you're good at, and don't squander them on things that you can't hope to master in time to recoup your investment. Leave searching to those who are good at it, and focus on your strengths. Let Google dominate this tiny field of endeavor, and license their technology for your internal use. We'll all be much happier that way. Sorry to hijack your thread for my pontificating, Marc. In case you didn't notice, though, I agree wholeheartedly with your post.:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

If only Bill was listening. I'm expecting one day to see a Microsoft refrigerator. It will keep meats cold but milk will spoil. You'll have to reboot it to get ice cubes, but then the spoiled milk will freeze. The first few versions will have GAC leaks in the crisper. I haven't found better development tools than Microsoft's. Windows is OK. Linux is OK. I'm OK, you're OK. OK?;P
