That's the dumbest thing I've heard all week. And I've heard a lot of dumb things this week. I don't actually know (personally) a good developer who smokes. cheers, Chris Maunder

ditto - all the ones I knew (don't think anyone on the current gig smokes) spent most of their time outside smoking. Some even considered that smoking was actually part of the role and thus did 10-20% less per day then the rest.
I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it. - pTerry

Here's a perspective, as a developer who used to smoke: The dumbest f***ing thing I ever did in life was to start smoking. The smartest thing I ever did was to quit.

You need a bigger group of friends. I've known a significant number of developers, and never found a [edit] positive [edit] correlation between the fact that they smoked and the quality of their work.

Interesting. I have found no link between being a smoker (cursed spawn of hell that should be burned at the stake) and being a good programmer. Thinking back, I know good programmers who smoke, and good programmers that don't. The best programmer I know abhors smoking, drinking and anything else that she doesn't do.

You have good and bad smokers, good and bad non-smokers. One thing is sure, the worst developer is the one who`s quitting smoking for the first few weeks/months. Then if he succeeds he`s back to being either good or bad - with a longer life expectancy.

how can you be a great developer if you spend half of your time smoking???...here, smoking in the office is not allowed, so while you are smoking, you can't be developing code (unless you take a laptop outside)...smoking requires at least one hand, so you would need to be a real good one handed typist...or risk getting ashes in the keyboard...and when you should be developing code, your thinking about how many more minutes to the next break so you can light up again :doh: Steve

Maybe it's a reference to coding until burn out or burning the midnight oil. :~ Or maybe it was one of things people say that you're supposed roll your eyes at and ignore. :rolleyes: BW

So does talking on the phone, being in a meeting, talking to customers, on the whiteboard ... Greatest developers I`ve seen are the ones spending the less time typing code (during office time).
