Someone said, it is impossible to be a good developer until he smokes. Are you a good developer? My fellow developers with me are used to smoke, however, I never saw anyone who is good in development and avoid smoking. Sameers (theAngrycodeR) Need custom software? You have good and bad smokers, good and bad non-smokers. One thing is sure, the worst developer is the one who`s quitting smoking for the first few weeks/months. Then if he succeeds he`s back to being either good or bad - with a longer life expectancy.

Maybe they were talking about smoked Salmon - that's good stuff. I don't know if it helps your coding, though. Regards, Nish

there's a difference between smoking and 'Ssssmmmmmmookkkkkiiiiiiiiiingg!!!!' - *really* good developers fall into latter category. Which are you? ;)

I think the actual quote is, "It is impossible to be a good developer until you have smoked a component that will take at least a week to replace, on a project needed yesterday."

Sure, and someone else said it's impossible to be a good developer unless you wear a pink tutu and do the zorba dance. Oh, and don't forget to jump off the cliff. Idiots. how can you be a great developer if you spend half of your time smoking???...here, smoking in the office is not allowed, so while you are smoking, you can't be developing code (unless you take a laptop outside)...smoking requires at least one hand, so you would need to be a real good one handed typist...or risk getting ashes in the keyboard...and when you should be developing code, your thinking about how many more minutes to the next break so you can light up again  Steve

So does talking on the phone, being in a meeting, talking to customers, on the whiteboard ... Greatest developers I`ve seen are the ones spending the less time typing code (during office time).

A smoker is not nessasarily a good or bad programmer. I am a smoker but it is pretty rare in this industry in Australia. I probably waste more of my time on the office pool table than I do smoking outside. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear

I think that someone who said that is just addicted to smoking. I avoid smoking like the plague, because it pretty much is. And if that makes me bad in development, well, I think I can live with that. Empahsis on live. :) - Phil****

Smoking is pretty much like The Plague, eh? Smoking is a viral infection? Huh..?? I never would have guessed... ...I guess my parents didn't get me immunized for that one. At least I'm free of Small Pox; that's good enough for me. That statement presents another odd point for consideration. When The Plagues swept through Euprope in the...what? 1300's? 1400's or so?...tobacco was not yet introduced to Europe. I'd have to research that to know for sure, and I don't have the time, so I won't. Back to my code...let's see where was I...? Ah yes...! Sigh. No, I didn't mean that Captain Literal. To "Avoid something like the plague" is a local colloquialism to mean "to keep away from as much as you possibly bloody well can" And my folks are in the same boat as yours. - Phil -- modified at 0:07 Friday 7th July, 2006 (Just added in an extra explanation about what I mean)

Someone said, it is impossible to be a good developer until he smokes. Are you a good developer? My fellow developers with me are used to smoke, however, I never saw anyone who is good in development and avoid smoking. Sameers (theAngrycodeR) Need custom software? I think someone mistook the real saying.... "It is impossible to be a good developer until you smoke a computer." (as in computer slang for "let the smoke out" "burn up" etc.) I have only known about 1 in 50 developers who smoke. But all the quality programmers I know have overloaded and smoked a computer. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Are you naturally stupid, or did you have to practice just for your message today? Maybe you and the guy that is held back from being a good developer by not being able to type should get together...
