Developer Coops?

With the latest posting about RAC, it brought back to mind an older idea I have had about Coops (Cooportives). The main idea is to have a site devoted to hooking people up with others to form a type of Coop on projects. People would have profiles that included their skill set and desires of work. Project owners would list their ideas for a project (not in detail but gives an hint about the project). People could ask to be invited into a project or a project owner could browse the profiles and invite them into the project. Upon acceptance of the invitation and terms of NDA, they would have access to the full details of the project. The coop part comes in from the idea that members will normally contribute for shares of profit instead of direct wage and often have a vote in the running of the project. The voting and amounts of shares would be up to the project owner and may not exist at all. The way I am seeing it is that people can list all their ideas out there and try to build teams to being the ideas to fruition. It also allows people to browse for projects to become part of based on their interests. The skills would not just include software development, but also, legal, marketing, sales, etc. It is about building small micro business where a person may work on many teams performing the jobs they are best fit. Finances for projects could come from those in the project or possibly selecting (again, with profiles in the system) investors who trade financial investment for shares in the project. I am pondering of building this site, but not sure how well it would go over. Also considering making the project to build the coop project site, a coop project itself :) Anyway, the question here is, if such as site existed, would you list yourself available for work and would you desire to post a project for your ideas? I might, but it's anyone's guess how that'd go. We tried it once here a while back, had three big projects going for a while... as far as i know, only one lasted, and that went through some severe changes on its way.

DeleteFXPFiles & CheckFavorites (Please rate this post!)Yep, that is pretty close, but I think it would be better to have the projects own themselves and add team members to the project to market and fund the project. Did not look close enough to see what cut of the profits actually gets paid out at their site and what their cut is. scary though having them hold the ownership of the project. Yuck! That's the last place I'd go to, as either a developer or a person looking for developers, the way that site looks. Blech! Marc XPressTier

Were they commerical projects? I look at it more of an open method of networking to find people who wish to join in on the venture. There are a lot of people out there and it is hard to find them. Even on such a system, it still will be hard to determine who is at the other end, but once the ball gets rolling and people start building reputations, I think it would smooth out and some quality teams would form. With the end goal being revenue, not just open source free ware, maybe people would approach it with a greater deal of seriousness. There are tons of great ideas out there along with many deep pocket people who are looking for investments not to mention the number of developers wanting to earn money working from home. Combine all of them along with marketers and lawers, and you should have a dynamic formula for success. Rocky <>< Latest Post: ASP.NET HttpException - Cannot use leading "..".. What particularly attracts me to your idea is this:

I think something that tries to bring all the pieces together in a "wide-area-company" would be interesting to work on. It's easy to get into the developer "thing" and work on the projects themselves, but personally, the two sections I quoted above seem to me to be the #1 focus of such a site. That would be really cool, to get legal and marketing people, investors, technical writers, testers, website developers, and so forth, all involved.

Only if I saw the rest of the infrastructure was actually happening. The "project" is, well, only 1/10th of the puzzle to actually getting something out there. So, I'm interested in the idea, but not actually as hosting a project myself, but the holistic concept itself. I hope I'm communicating clearly here. :~ Marc XPressTier
