I hadn't gotten a chance to read both articles, since the one just hit my inbox when I saw Chris' post. But it looks like either it is an Associated Press article or the source for the other site did a copy and paste of the NY Times article. The computer software maker is now considering selling My Services to corporations in a traditional package form, rather than as a service. The companies would maintain the data for their own users. Which makes more sense to me than having data on Microsoft's servers. The Slashdot crowd are going to have a field day with this one. Michael :-)

I think that Hailstorm -- what kind of name is that anyway? I assume it's meant to describe what they want to do to their competitors. Anyway, Hailstorm is a solution looking for a problem and that's why it (may have) failed. MS just wants a way to make the internet proprietary (what the h*ll do I want a 'passport' for anyway?). :| [edit] Dictionary.com's word of the day: desuetude \DES-wih-tood, -tyood\, noun: The cessation of use; discontinuance of practice or custom; disuse. I'm glad it's gone. Actually, it's probably not really gone. Miscrosoft will re-label it and re-package it and we'll see it again in a year or two. Hailstorm was seperate from Passport. I can't see this affecting it. A lot will depend on how Microsoft repackage the Hailstorm technology. Michael :-)

I thought that Passport was what you described and Hailstorm was the value added web services. Calender, Email, ToDoList that could be accessed from where ever you were in the world via your Passport. I always thought it was a cool idea and would love to be able to access that kind of info either from my ipaq or from a desktop machine. It would certainly make my life easier when I'm out on site. Guess I'll just have to get around to writing one myself and host it on my own server. Michael :-)

jeesh. I seem to remember another MS heavy leaving early on when .NET was being developed. Can't remember his name though.
