Sound in the outer space and spaceships

A nice question: how the hell can spaceships produce noise when they're in space? No air -> no noise. So, every science fiction film is wrong with that, isn't it? Obviously a space battle wouldn't be that cool without sound, explosions and so on, though. :-D

Same goes for the use of computers in some movies. I mean what the hell is that thing that the one operating them is doing. Windows poping everywhere, zooming pictures to the extreme with maximum clarity, etc. That is so unrealistic. Can't they friggin hire a person who at least has an idea about computers? They probably think this is cool. I think the explosions are cool with sounds, but probably a scientist out there has the same feeling that I have regarding the computer thing in movies.

I think the new BSG doesn't have sound in the space shots.

Of course they can produce noise...the better question is, will they produce noise/sound?

there will be some transmission of 'sound', if you're close enough to the explosion that your vessel is hit by the expanding cloud of gas/debris/fire/plasma. it will shake your ship, and you will hear it.

That has been brought up in many of the extras CDs for the movies I have. They always end up saying that exterior shots are really boring without sound and tend to agree with them. If you are going to have a dog-fight in space you really do need sound. Besides, it is a Sci-Fi flick so who says it needs to be real :) I also seem to remember an old Sci-Fi movie where they used real guns outside. Guys in space suits but real guns. Seemed really odd to me...

They don't... but computers in each space-ship gather the energy produced by other spaceships and automatically generate game-like sounds for the pilots so that they don't get bored and fall-asleep in the middle of a space battle... ;P :rolleyes:

Even assuming you could hear the noise, given the distances involved the noise would be extremely delayed. This is actually a common error in movie scenes in a sound carrying atmosphere; no matter how far away the explosion, or sound originates, we hear it simulatenously with the explosion, gun shot, etc.

Not if my theory is correct.... :cool: of course it means that you can reprogram the computers to produce any sound you want. Lion roars instead of torpedo sounds.... psycho theme music instead of engine noises.... and nails drawn across the chalk board instead of laser blasts. :) just imagine the fun you could have replacing the noises in the computer to harass your flying buddies. :laugh:

While there is no medium for sound to travel the electromagnetic disturbence from effects in space reach the hull of the observer ship causing the ships atmosphere to vibrate at certain frequencys most notablely the brown noise.

I believe the 'real' guns would still work. The gas is ignited inside the casing of the cartridge and does not depend upon there being an atmosphere to work. However, for every actiont here is the opposite reaction, so you would fire a small bullet, but the energy of it going one way sends you in another. I like lasers better, you can fire and stay in one place :suss:
