You really need to write an article about how you convinced her to do that. Somehow, the toy budget in my house always seems to not be spent on toys for me :sigh:.

Well the time is finally here. The division that I work(ed) for at Intel[^] (MCPD - Modular Communications Platform Division) has been officially transitioned over to being owned by Eicon Networks[^] and soon to become officially running under the new name of Dialogic[^]... Part of my agreement to go to the new company was a nice healthy bonus check of a few months pay so I just found my self facing the quandary of what to do with the recent influx of 'found money' that I had. Above an beyond paying some other bills (the responsible part of me :) ) I decided to treat my self with a new desktop since the old 3.2Ghz P4 was slowing down just a bit ;) Decided to go whole hog so to speak: Dual Intel Xeon 5050 3ghz 667mhz 4M Active 4GB DDR2 533MHz Fully Buffered Memory 2 - 400GB SATA 300 Hard Drives 2 Nvidia 5500 PCI Video cards Now I have to WAIT for it to arrive (7-10 business days). UGH! Can't wait to see how VS.NET runs on it :)

I agree with those that say put some into savings, I will say your retirement. I ask why the bonus. Are you now a new employee again? I.E. Is this really a payout of your benefits you are loosing?

No problem with that where my systems are. My office is all the way up in the attic on the third floor. All the heat in the house goes up into my Office all year long. I always have to worry about keeping my office cool, event in the winter really.

It was more of a signing bonus really. Intels way of 'thanking' those that decided to transition tot he new company and not take advantage of this time to jump ship and move on. The only real benefit that I am loosing is stock options/discount purchase (Intel has a generous stock option and stock purchase program) since Dialogic is a privately held company there is no stock involved. That had been nice over the last few years as I was able to use stock to redo my living room and other things around the house. There is a definite advantage to being able to buy stock at a 15% discount :) I am excited about the new company though. I have to say that Intel really had their head up their a** for the last few years running this division. While they are a great company to work for and had a strong position in the market (for the most part) they really had no idea how to run a Telecommunications product company. It showed in lost market share and poor revenue numbers.

I agree, and now I think it is going to be harder to keep up because as you add cores you need the proper mother board to handle it so upgrading is going to be more of a pain in the butt going forward. No more just pulling and replacing chips. I see a future where the mother boards are going to be split up into two parts I think and to upgrade you will be replacing the CPU core area with a new one to support the higher core CPUs.

You may now need to move your office (and therefore computer) into the basement and use it to heat the entire house.

That is great to hear. Hope all works well and the new leadership meets your expectations.

you'll find out soon enough. ;) I am surprised that you don't know though, I've spotted even the motherboards inside of alienware from their ads and been able to duplicate their builds locally using the same equipment. :) Our dual/dual at work is a supermicro X7DA8

Yeah, this add[^] gives no real details. I emailed them about it but have not heard back yet. I am thinking that it is probably not an Intel board for that price but I am not viewing that as a bad thing since I have worked with them before in my lab at work and found them to be a bit, shall we say, temperMENTAL.

If I did not have the exercise of going form the attic to the basement every 1.5 hours on the weekends I would end up looking like some Jaba-The-Hut type IT guy :)
