My first company I was at I was
Software Engineer, then after 3 years I found I was mentoring new people that whereSenior Software Engineer. I queried my boss about this and he said he regarded me more than just aSoftware Engineerbut wouldn't promote me ?!? I refused to mentor from then on and shortly after quit. The company counter offered with 15% pay rise and promotion toSenior Sofware Engineerso I stayed for 6 months, got the 3.5K bonus that was also part of the counter offer and then left (as other promises of change weren't realised). The next company had a flat structure so I was employed asSoftware Engineer. I left after 2 years and the new company wouldn't employ me as Senior as I didn't have experience of security/certificates etc. 9 months later I left for another company that wouldn't employ me as Senior as I didn't have media experience. 2 years later, still atSoftware Engineer, I've handed in my notice. My new title will beTechnical Consultantsweet! :DNever argue with an imbecile; they bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

Hi i always call myself a 'computer programmer' lmao (even tho i've had my own software business for many years), and have done since i started coding in the mid 70's. it's a pet h8 to see poncy pretentious self-given titles (even 'software engineer' sounds dubious to me). stick with programmer, it does what it says on the tin hehe. Is it just me being picky, or does anyone else get peeved when someone represents themselves as a "Software Engineer" without the degree or certification to back it up? Your local electrician isn't going to bill themselves as an electrical engineer, a programmer (no matter how good they are) shouldn't bill themselves as a software engineer unless they have all the engineering skills to back that title up...

Yeah you're being too picky. It's not a clearly defined term to be sure, but it doesn't apply only to those who have paper. You have to credit people for their experience, and most self-taught programmers are 10 times the wizards of the college-produced ones. Degrees and certifications say nothing in this world. Well, not to people like me who are looking for skills, rather than paper. A degree is good to have, but it's not proof of anything other than maybe ability to stick it out. I have a liberal arts degree with major in Biology and minor in Math, but I have never worked in either of those fields with the exception of part time stuff and internships. College is good 'basic training' for life in the business world, but it doesn't mean you're competent at any specific thing. I was a programmer before college and I am now, making over 20 years experience... that's what counts, not some paper.
