Level 60 Grand Master Software Engineer. (it's a little long but it fits nicely on a business card)

hmmmm... we don't really have them, but they look nice on business cards. Given the presence of a hollywood team of visual experts and 3D visualization experts from across the country I think it is time I change mine from "Computer Programmer". Work doesn't care, as long as you don't lie, or the title denotes a seniority (we're a flat organization, mostly all peers). So now I am in search of a job title.... (or subtitle) Computer programmer/3D specialist? any ideas?... yeah I know... creativity is easier in 3D graphics than tooting my own horn.

I always preferred Computer Programmer, but use Senior Software Engineer since that's what people expect (especially those writing the checks; it just sounds like you should pay the latter more.) I knew a guy once who listed his title as Software Guy.

Is it just me being picky, or does anyone else get peeved when someone represents themselves as a "Software Engineer" without the degree or certification to back it up? Your local electrician isn't going to bill themselves as an electrical engineer, a programmer (no matter how good they are) shouldn't bill themselves as a software engineer unless they have all the engineering skills to back that title up...

Yeah you're being too picky. It's not a clearly defined term to be sure, but it doesn't apply only to those who have paper. You have to credit people for their experience, and most self-taught programmers are 10 times the wizards of the college-produced ones. Degrees and certifications say nothing in this world. Well, not to people like me who are looking for skills, rather than paper. A degree is good to have, but it's not proof of anything other than maybe ability to stick it out. I have a liberal arts degree with major in Biology and minor in Math, but I have never worked in either of those fields with the exception of part time stuff and internships. College is good 'basic training' for life in the business world, but it doesn't mean you're competent at any specific thing. I was a programmer before college and I am now, making over 20 years experience... that's what counts, not some paper.

my favorite business card I've seen so far was pretty bland on the front: "Systems Engineer" ... so on it continued ... but if you flipped the card over... watermarked on the back it said "Lead Ninja"

I'd love to see any CVs or resumes from people like him (or like you!). A sense of humor is a plus in any field, but a job title that accurately reflects someone's expertise is golden. I'm looking for Senior Developers who fulfill a consultant role. jwalden (at) pointbridge.com is my addess, feel free to pass it along. JW

I stole this one from someone else, who also stole it. So I apologize to the original creator. Doer of things I think it's a good title

hmmmm... we don't really have them, but they look nice on business cards. A mate of mine works for ibm and his business card lists his title as "Linux hacker" i still think it's the most impressive business card i have ever seen, tho having the big blue logo there definetly helps too.
