Job Title....

Is it just me being picky, or does anyone else get peeved when someone represents themselves as a "Software Engineer" without the degree or certification to back it up? Your local electrician isn't going to bill themselves as an electrical engineer, a programmer (no matter how good they are) shouldn't bill themselves as a software engineer unless they have all the engineering skills to back that title up...
Yeah you're being too picky. It's not a clearly defined term to be sure, but it doesn't apply only to those who have paper. You have to credit people for their experience, and most self-taught programmers are 10 times the wizards of the college-produced ones. Degrees and certifications say nothing in this world. Well, not to people like me who are looking for skills, rather than paper. A degree is good to have, but it's not proof of anything other than maybe ability to stick it out. I have a liberal arts degree with major in Biology and minor in Math, but I have never worked in either of those fields with the exception of part time stuff and internships. College is good 'basic training' for life in the business world, but it doesn't mean you're competent at any specific thing. I was a programmer before college and I am now, making over 20 years experience... that's what counts, not some paper.

Actually, salary is based on the department I am in and experience/training/degree. Ironically my department is Engineering. How is "3D Software Engineer/Architect" (I just "borrowed" it from Monster.com)

Work doesn't care, as long as you don't lie, or the title denotes a seniority (we're a flat organization, mostly all peers). So now I am in search of a job title.... A mate of mine works for ibm and his business card lists his title as "Linux hacker" i still think it's the most impressive business card i have ever seen, tho having the big blue logo there definetly helps too.
