This year my wife and I we are going to visit my Family for the Holidays. I know it can be a good time, but sometime it can be burned time. Then I decided to study or learn something new. I was thinking to hone my skills with C#, or dedicate my time to learn about WCF, WF and LINQ. Or hone my skills with XML, and XSLT (it’s being a while since I am not doing anything with it.). Maybe study and learn how to work better with PHP (I don’t used so frequently, and I learned doing something. I keep thinking I have to many gaps to fill, and I do too many bad practices). Or maybe do something very radical and learn something new that I always want it to have on my bag. I was thinking go for Python, or learn PostgreSQL, or maybe XCode. By the way we are traveling light and we will bring only my wife’s Laptop, a brand new MacBook Pro. I am thinking to install Parallels and then Play with my virtual installation of WinXP. What do you guys think I should go for it? Hone my skills, or learn something new. And what I should dedicate my time too? I don’t want to carry bunch of books, and end starting to read all, and not finishing any.

That life is about more than work. Why not learn how to ski, surf or, snowboard. I bet that those will give you much more enjoyment in the years to come than the latest fad ORM and presentation frameworks from MS. Just wanted to add that I didn't intend to sound mean-spirited if it came across that way. But, I do mean it. Enjoy your vacation! Don't waste it studying! :)

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. - -Lazarus Long, Time Enough For Love

i will love to learn to Surf. but since I broke my arm a month ago, in a biking accident I don't think I can learn how to Surf. Maybe next time. :) Maybe I will dedicate my time to sleep, a thing that I don't do enough.:):) Thank You.

Same here. That aside, I love learning these new technologies also I guess I am a bit burnt out. Once you get out of the cast, get yourself to the west coast and surf. I learned when I was 20, now I try to do it at least every other year. Cheers

I suggest honing your skills in keeping your wife smiling. Then, it depends entirely on what you do now, and what you see yourself doing in the future. I admit to also taking tech books and my notebook on holidays. I ended up writing a fair amount of code on our cruise.

Hows that going for you? Me, I think I am certainly lacking in that technology. :)

It's not a question of technology. It's always hard working for a client who keeps changing the spec.

Learn massage techniques, practice on your wife (if she is willing) and enjoy your vacations. :) don't program on vacations. :)
