Yeah, I don't want to get too excited before someone else holds it and comments. The touchscreen might not be tactile enough, it might be too complex, battery life may be awful and it may cost more than my MacBook Pro :) Still, it is impressive even as just a concept demo.

    Couldn't agree more.

"When you have made evil the means of survival, do not expect men to remain good. Do not expect them to stay moral and lose their lives for the purpose of becoming the fodder of the immoral. Do not expect them to produce, when production is punished and looting rewarded. Do not ask, `Who is destroying the world?' You are."

Nice, Apple are doing the iPhone[^]. Full touch-screen, no physical buttons, 8gb, music, video and... wow, it makes phone calls :) It runs OS X and includes the Safari browser, not just a cut-down mobile browser (so full Ajax.) It looks pretty good. $499 for 4gb model, $599 for 8gb (no brainer), available in June in the USA, Q4 in Europe, 2008 for Asia. Apple site updated with pretty pictures and marketeering.[^]

Too bad their service here sucks. If I switched I wouldn't get ANY signal in half my state! :sigh:

If their coverage in Canada is anything like the US you won't want to switch unless you REALLY like listening to MP3s since you won't have service in half the country.

As far as I know, Cingular does not operate in Canada. (Unless they have a tie-up with some Canadian phone company)

Looks pretty cool, but they simply won't be able to call it an IPhone since that is trademarked to another company already. I wonder in the end how people will feel about the non tactile nature of the buttons. I've never held an IPod but I imagine one of the really good things about the current design is that you can operate it without looking at it because you can feel the buttons on it. If they could have added some sort of tactility to it in addition to the touch screen that would be a *killer* app.

They must have bought it from Linksys/Cisco or feel that they have a legal position to use it. Jobs keeps calling it that and all the screens say iPhone.

Not likely, in fact there are 4 companies that have applied for the IPhone trademark or derivitive, two of which have already sold products with that trademark, none of them are Apple. http://blogs.zdnet.com/ip-telephony/?p=1371[^] The UPSPTO is simply never going to give a trademark to a company (apple) that apparently hasn't even applied for it over two other companies that have already been selling products with that trademark.

I would imagine they have already worked out deals. It would be stupid for a company the size of Apple to have such obvious trademark conflicts and be sued for everything they own.

I rarely ever use my iPod without looking at it. The only thing might be to hit next while it's in shuffle mode and I don't want to listen to a song that's come up. But I'm sure there'll be some sort of gesture you can draw over it to do that instead.

Well as Scottie might say "you canna break the laws of physics". This is a similar situation. I see absolutely no way around it. If there was ever a hope that Cisco would sell the trademark to Apple it was surely dashed when only a few months ago Cisco released a line of products under that long held trademark.

Fair enough but they must have worked something out. Jobs is pretty candid about this kind of thing, if they couldn't get "iPhone" he would have said so in the keynote; "Lads, we wanted to call it an iPhone too but you know these laws, we just can't, so it's the Apple Phone." But he called it the iPhone. And the Apple website says iPhone. I hope they get it, it fits everything else they have done the past few years.

Well, it's got full iPod functionality in it and it isn't an afterthought like on most MP3 phones. nano like storage though.
