iPhone is real [updated] [again]

Well, it's an impressive showcase of combining all technology into one single device but personally I'm not interested. I bet battery life would be the biggest letdown. This is clearly not a product for everyone. Some people manage to drain cell phone battery just by talking. Imagine what would happen if they also used it as music player and PDA. Would you want your battery to die down in the middle of an important call because you listened to the music too much? And since it's apple the battery is going to be non-replaceble (at least not field replacable). Interface wise it may be a good solution, but until I use one first hand there is no way to telling. I used zune in the store and it had horrible interface, completely non-intuitive and took ages to figure it out (actually I never did figure it out since I could only use one in store and obviously had no time nor access to the manual). BTW I bet the interface will be one huge frustration for SMS messaging. I just can't see touch screen interface being quick and responsive enough for fast SMS typing. Size wise it's good if you think of it as three devices in one, but it's still bigger than single phone, or music player, or PDA. Price? A little too high, but that's expected from the Apple. I can buy a decent phone from Nokia and a music player for a lot less than $600. Integration? With iTunes and iCalendar (or whatever) sure, but I doubt very much it will sync with outlook. And that's not to mention that personally I would never install anything apple on my PC for gazillions of reasons. So who is destined to own one? Hardcore apple fans for sure. Oh-look-at-me people sure. Any tech savy person (PC based) will not touch apple software, business people will not touch it because it won't synch with office suite. In the end it will become another fashion statement just like an iPod. Many will buy it, as long as they can afford it, but others will look for a different solution.

Dees Wooks Barree Cool Mon! I'm not at all an Apple Fanboy in fact if anything I'm the opposite but this device just might be seen on my person and in public. Looks absolutely cool! What I hope is that it will start a series of copycat and 1-up devices to come from other makers watching their marketshare dissolve away. Then I stay with Sprint. If that sucker worked with Sprint man I'd preorder today.

I think you have a point there. Motorola, Nokia, RIMM etc. will have to take a look at their SmartPhones and update them considerably. They'll do it cheaper than Apple but, now being an Apple MacBook Pro user, I doubt they will do it as well. Microsoft will have to look at getting Windows Vista into Windows Mobile. Apple have set the bar. Lets hope the rest respond. BTW Motorola, Nokia and RIMM shares dropped during Apple's keynote while Apple's shares rose $5. Nice.

Absolutely, the reason I haven't bought any of the previous MP3 phone combos. But Apple have a good reputation and I reckon this device will please me. It would be silly to buy two devices when one will do.

Yeah, sad but true. Though I'll bet any WiFi file transfering is going to exclude any of Apple's music files. They are worse than Microsoft when it comes to DRM sadly.

It's kind of funny. They will all copy apple but they won't do a great job of copying apple. If they did do a great job or even 1-up'd apple it would imply that apple was really better. Instead they all do these half-baked imitations that only make people flock to apple more. Instead competition really needs to look at what apple did as the base and then inherit/extend into something very cool. Why not have a device that had a smaller screen and hard keys on the top and it opened like a clam with a pivot screen (think notepad style notebooks) that could be rotated around and folded back down for a softscreen. You can have the front smaller screen be your digital media screen. You can always access songs and get at your playlist without interrupting other applications. The inside/clamshell/rotatable screen is where your browser, mail client and softkey dialer can be accessed. My idea comes from the enV commercials I've seen lately where the enV opens up to have a keyboard inside. My idea is put the softscreen inside and put it on a pivot/swivel. Have a smaller screen and keys outside so that it can be used as an MP3 player primary and a phone/pc secondary or vice versa due to it's ability to pivot. See? I'm a genius.:rolleyes: - Rex

Nokia (I think it as them) released a phone that had a full touchscreen but then a keypad that folded over half of it when in "closed" position. The problem, as Jobs noted in his keynote, is that that folding keypad had to be light and thin to fit and it felt rubbish. Flimsy, unsatisfying key action. You'd need to make it out of something expensive to get something thin enough to feel good. But I think the real problem is in the details, which Apple does so well. My simple Nokia phone is very solid, except for the back cover which feels like cheap plastic. It ruins the whole phone, just that one small detail. An Apple iPod on the other hand is simple but 100% quality. Motorola have some great concepts but the fit and finish is awful. It reminds me of how Porsche have become a small "big" company (just like Apple are.) They stick to their ideas, they make them simple and they build them with quality. Porsche is now the most profitable automobile manufacturer on the planet and are buying their way into companies like VW. Quality companies seem to start simple and ruthlessly keep quality a priority OVER features.

I don't think that is a "very important" thing, even in Europe. 3G is a bit of a failure and I reckon Apple is waiting for 4G rather. What do you want 3G for?
