iPhone is real [updated] [again]

Nice, Apple are doing the iPhone[^]. Full touch-screen, no physical buttons, 8gb, music, video and... wow, it makes phone calls :) It runs OS X and includes the Safari browser, not just a cut-down mobile browser (so full Ajax.) It looks pretty good. $499 for 4gb model, $599 for 8gb (no brainer), available in June in the USA, Q4 in Europe, 2008 for Asia. Apple site updated with pretty pictures and marketeering.[^]

Yeah, sad but true. Though I'll bet any WiFi file transfering is going to exclude any of Apple's music files. They are worse than Microsoft when it comes to DRM sadly.

I think you have a point there. Motorola, Nokia, RIMM etc. will have to take a look at their SmartPhones and update them considerably. They'll do it cheaper than Apple but, now being an Apple MacBook Pro user, I doubt they will do it as well. Microsoft will have to look at getting Windows Vista into Windows Mobile. Apple have set the bar. Lets hope the rest respond. BTW Motorola, Nokia and RIMM shares dropped during Apple's keynote while Apple's shares rose $5. Nice.

It's kind of funny. They will all copy apple but they won't do a great job of copying apple. If they did do a great job or even 1-up'd apple it would imply that apple was really better. Instead they all do these half-baked imitations that only make people flock to apple more. Instead competition really needs to look at what apple did as the base and then inherit/extend into something very cool. Why not have a device that had a smaller screen and hard keys on the top and it opened like a clam with a pivot screen (think notepad style notebooks) that could be rotated around and folded back down for a softscreen. You can have the front smaller screen be your digital media screen. You can always access songs and get at your playlist without interrupting other applications. The inside/clamshell/rotatable screen is where your browser, mail client and softkey dialer can be accessed. My idea comes from the enV commercials I've seen lately where the enV opens up to have a keyboard inside. My idea is put the softscreen inside and put it on a pivot/swivel. Have a smaller screen and keys outside so that it can be used as an MP3 player primary and a phone/pc secondary or vice versa due to it's ability to pivot. See? I'm a genius. - Rex

Nokia (I think it as them) released a phone that had a full touchscreen but then a keypad that folded over half of it when in "closed" position. The problem, as Jobs noted in his keynote, is that that folding keypad had to be light and thin to fit and it felt rubbish. Flimsy, unsatisfying key action. You'd need to make it out of something expensive to get something thin enough to feel good. But I think the real problem is in the details, which Apple does so well. My simple Nokia phone is very solid, except for the back cover which feels like cheap plastic. It ruins the whole phone, just that one small detail. An Apple iPod on the other hand is simple but 100% quality. Motorola have some great concepts but the fit and finish is awful. It reminds me of how Porsche have become a small "big" company (just like Apple are.) They stick to their ideas, they make them simple and they build them with quality. Porsche is now the most profitable automobile manufacturer on the planet and are buying their way into companies like VW. Quality companies seem to start simple and ruthlessly keep quality a priority OVER features.

I don't think that is a "very important" thing, even in Europe. 3G is a bit of a failure and I reckon Apple is waiting for 4G rather. What do you want 3G for?

"We expect to receive a signed agreement today," she [Cisco] said.[^] You are right John, Apple can't break the rules, but thankfully they have seem to have paid Cisco a lot of money. And finding the iPhone on the Cisco website is bloody difficult.

3G is very important in Europe - it will be extremely hard for Apple to get the networks to subsidise their handsets without it. I've also read that Apple's phone doesnt support MMS? That may not matter in the United States where SMS is still considered a sin, but in Europe MMS is being invested in heavily by the networks as the way out of their 3G debts and again without that support very few networks will subsidise their handset. That basically means that with the current feature set the Apple phone will be limited to non-subsidised sales at £350 ish (which is damned high for any phone, and by far the highest of all lacking 3G and MMS). That is why I suspect Apple will be launching a different model in Europe and Asia - one that costs a little more but it will then be subsidised by the networks and be made available to you and I for £100-£150 or so.

To network operators, not users. User adoption is pathetic, application and phone support is poor. As you say the operators have these massive investments in 3G networks but nobody is utilising them properly. And it has been a good few years now. We are working on 3G applications but I think 3G is a lost cause which will be leap frogged soon enough. 3G will never recoup the investments made in it. East Asia is already moving on from 3G, the US will skip 3G and Europe will have to invest again. You may be right though in that Apple release an iPhone here with 3G support but it will just be a marketing feature and a temporary stop-gap.

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milk:laugh: Oh man, that sucks. Thanks for the news. My bet is on Apple though. They successfully fought the Beatles, they'll manage with Cisco. I tried to find the Cisco iPhone product on their website the day the iPhone was announced but didn't see it. I go to the Cisco website today and it is no a feature product on the home page :-D iPhone.com is owned by someone else, iPhone.org is owned by Apple, iPhone.net god knows. Cisco was recently acquired wasn't it? I wonder if the new owner wants to battle Apple.

Well yeah, as with most of these 'features' your typical consumer only wants a phone they can make phone calls on. With the Apple phone though, they are aimed at a very select style of consumer -- people who want to show off their status -- and they are exactly the consumers the networks are battling hand over foot to get onto 3G and to use their other premium services. They will never actively market a phone that lacks those abilities -- the networks have to answer to shareholdes too.

Yeah, I don't want to get too excited before someone else holds it and comments. The touchscreen might not be tactile enough, it might be too complex, battery life may be awful and it may cost more than my MacBook Pro :) Still, it is impressive even as just a concept demo.

I'd like to feel the Braile Version... What with all those colourful bumps and stuff! Wonder if you get busy signals that ripple accross the touch pad? What happens if you put it on mute, put it down, and forget where you put it? Does it have a Kibbles and bits smell to it so that your seeing eye dog can find it for you? Have Apple really thought much about this, after all most phones these days are quite usable. Why pay $$$ for a phone, with a TV, and a radio and email - when you already have those things? Senario: I am driving my car (The reason you have Braile on the Drive up ATM's at Banks.) watching the news on my iphone - when all of a sudden it rings... Now even more distracted than before, and wanting to watch the news, with my radio playing in the background, I answer the phone call to say I'm busy at the moment, while now avoiding the car in front of me who is watching porn on his iphone (I know that because he's swerving!) So now I'm p'eed off because I missed the news, had to avoid an accident, and having trouble switching the phone off. As you can see I'm a fan of Weapons of Mass Distraction - Goooooo Apple, the members of the Accident Prone People's LeaguE (APPLE) love you.
