I don't think that is a "very important" thing, even in Europe. 3G is a bit of a failure and I reckon Apple is waiting for 4G rather. What do you want 3G for?

3G is very important in Europe - it will be extremely hard for Apple to get the networks to subsidise their handsets without it. I've also read that Apple's phone doesnt support MMS? That may not matter in the United States where SMS is still considered a sin, but in Europe MMS is being invested in heavily by the networks as the way out of their 3G debts and again without that support very few networks will subsidise their handset. That basically means that with the current feature set the Apple phone will be limited to non-subsidised sales at £350 ish (which is damned high for any phone, and by far the highest of all lacking 3G and MMS). That is why I suspect Apple will be launching a different model in Europe and Asia - one that costs a little more but it will then be subsidised by the networks and be made available to you and I for £100-£150 or so.

To network operators, not users. User adoption is pathetic, application and phone support is poor. As you say the operators have these massive investments in 3G networks but nobody is utilising them properly. And it has been a good few years now. We are working on 3G applications but I think 3G is a lost cause which will be leap frogged soon enough. 3G will never recoup the investments made in it. East Asia is already moving on from 3G, the US will skip 3G and Europe will have to invest again. You may be right though in that Apple release an iPhone here with 3G support but it will just be a marketing feature and a temporary stop-gap.

:laugh: Oh man, that sucks. Thanks for the news. My bet is on Apple though. They successfully fought the Beatles, they'll manage with Cisco. I tried to find the Cisco iPhone product on their website the day the iPhone was announced but didn't see it. I go to the Cisco website today and it is no a feature product on the home page :-D iPhone.com is owned by someone else, iPhone.org is owned by Apple, iPhone.net god knows. Cisco was recently acquired wasn't it? I wonder if the new owner wants to battle Apple.

Well yeah, as with most of these 'features' your typical consumer only wants a phone they can make phone calls on. With the Apple phone though, they are aimed at a very select style of consumer -- people who want to show off their status -- and they are exactly the consumers the networks are battling hand over foot to get onto 3G and to use their other premium services. They will never actively market a phone that lacks those abilities -- the networks have to answer to shareholdes too.

I'd like to feel the Braile Version... What with all those colourful bumps and stuff! Wonder if you get busy signals that ripple accross the touch pad? What happens if you put it on mute, put it down, and forget where you put it? Does it have a Kibbles and bits smell to it so that your seeing eye dog can find it for you? Have Apple really thought much about this, after all most phones these days are quite usable. Why pay $$$ for a phone, with a TV, and a radio and email - when you already have those things? Senario: I am driving my car (The reason you have Braile on the Drive up ATM's at Banks.) watching the news on my iphone - when all of a sudden it rings... Now even more distracted than before, and wanting to watch the news, with my radio playing in the background, I answer the phone call to say I'm busy at the moment, while now avoiding the car in front of me who is watching porn on his iphone (I know that because he's swerving!) So now I'm p'eed off because I missed the news, had to avoid an accident, and having trouble switching the phone off. As you can see I'm a fan of Weapons of Mass Distraction - Goooooo Apple, the members of the Accident Prone People's LeaguE (APPLE) love you. :cool:

Most normal mobile phones are shite to use. The smartphone variants are even worse. I welcome some Apple UI ideas for a mobile phone.

Here in Sweden 3G is really big. The net covers not far from 100% of the population so for us it's an important thing.

3G covers a lot of ground but usage is far below what the operators need to make money. Most users buy phones with 3G and don't use it or don't know they are using it. Those who do understand 3G are waiting for better packages such as flat-rate fees. 3G has been a big letdown and I doubt it will ever reach its potential. It will be replaced before it is used properly.

There are many phones already on the market with 3G support. They just aren't being used to their full. Apple isn't putting 3G into the iPhone because 3G coverage in the States is very poor. They will probably put 3G into the iPhone when it is released in Europe. It won't help 3G though and it will only be a selling feature, not a feature that many people use.
