:-D I like biking, but it's sorta dangerous, a car almost hit me twice! So I turned into boxing until I broke my wrist:laugh: now I'm jogging, the safest, cheapest and best exercise:cool:

Given that history of (almost) injuries, it isn't going to take long until a guard dog will see you and think you are a bad guy and bite you -_-

Well you have to remember that you are a human first and a programmer second. You can't program if you're dead or incapacitated. There is no need to prioritise - your health and fitness is at number and isn't shifting. I get the same problems. Stiffness and soreness. I went to the chiropractor, and he x-rayed my back which looked like a race track s-bend. No wonder it was hurting. That was the tipping point for me. I bought an expensive ergonomic chair. I made a little box to put my screens up on so that they are higher and I'm not crouching over. I'm even thinking about that new MS ergonomic keyboard. But years of slouching are hard to erase, and it's not what you sit on, but your attitude to sitting that makes the difference. The best results come from a regular stretch and a good 30 minutes of exercise every day. I split mine between surfing in the morning before breakfast or running after work. Obviously living by the beach helps enormously but I decided a while back that life is for living, and if you get yourself somewhere you actually like, everything else will fall into place. Some people live in houses they don't like, next to neighbours they despise, and trudge off to jobs that make them miserable. How on earth are you supposed to find the motivation to stay healthy in that environment! Just remember though : if you do more of what you do, you'll get more of what you've got. So put down that donut!

What do you do to keep yourself fit and healthy. I am talking from the point of view of a programmer who works round the clock rarely finding time to relax. Recently our project leader gave a friendly spanking related to taking care of one'e health and family life too. How do you relax yourself on work and off work. I do go for a walk early in the morning. But still I do have frequent back aches that too real painful ones. What kind of exercises do you do. Will be interesting to know. Since you all are experienced in this regard you can give me better ideas. Recently I read this from one mail

"First people sacrifice health to earn money and then they sacrifice money get back to health". Sounded funny to me. :)

Lately I have found some more time to relax and that resulted in shopping with my sister. Don't do much to keep fit, except riding my bicycle every day for around 30 minutes.

But still I do have frequent back aches that too real painful ones. I used to have back aches but they have been reduced considerably after some one gave me the tip of adjusting my chair so that the seat is inclined forward (about 10 degrees) this makes you sit straighter and helps to avoid back problems. It feels strange at first but really helps. I also find that a gin and tonic in the evening helps with back pains;) Swinglish

me and my wife do jiu-jitsu. It's excellent for your health and a good relationship-therapy. Now we argue a whole lot less :-D oh and ps: to avoid back pains I never ever sit straight. I move about every ten minutes, then left, then right, then I lean backwards, etc...

I was brought up with the belief that the juniper berry was good for kidney problems (backache?) and gin was the best way of imbibing it. Well thats my story and I'm sticking to it.:-D

A friend of mine passed away last year aged 24 1/2 (he had a massive heart attack). While no one knows exactly what could have caused it (poor fellow was a teetotaller), some think it might have been due to extreme stress at work. He worked for USTRI, Trivandrum by the way.

How did you work this out? From my experience, developers fall into the following: Single developer: Sit at a desk for 8 hours developing, drive to and from work. Get home and a) Play on a PC/Mac at home, b) Play on a console, c) watch tv/dvds Married/Partnered developer: Sit at a desk for 8 hours developing, drive to and from work. Get home and get nagged by partner. Both stressfull and very bad :-( I've just signed up with a gym and plan to go three times a week to try and lose some of my 17st10lb weight. (I'm 6foot1) My goal: get down to 15st!

Never argue with an imbecile; they bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

Given that history of (almost) injuries, it isn't going to take long until a guard dog will see you and think you are a bad guy and bite you -_-

Walking the dogs, twice a day (5-6km each walk) and doing Aikido twice a week. The dogs also keeps me sane, it's hard to be upset or even stressed when they are frolicing[^]:-D rgds /Jonas

Finding time to fit in breaks is the difficult part; I work away from home so I also tend to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants a lot. I try to go swimming in the hotel pool when I can, and I always use the stairs rather than the lift. I walk at least 30 minutes/day and I have an exercise machine in my office at home which I occassionally use. When I'm not working I spend a lot of time with my 3 year old son - now that's exercise!

It would be glorious to see mankind at leisure for once. It is nothing but work, work, work. I cannot easily buy a blank-book to write thoughts in; they are commonly ruled for dollars and cents. A[man], seeing me making a minute in the fields, took it for granted that I was calculating my wages. — business! - I think that there is nothing, not even crime, more opposed to poetry, to philosophy, ay, to life itself, than this incessant business.
