Odd ain't the word for it. All this faffing around, but I can get a DVD with every version of Windows ever made down at Panthip Plaza for about ten bucks :-| They throw in every version of DOS as well, just in case

There's a web site you have to go to and enter your details. They give you a number which you write on the coupon and mail/fax in with a copy of your receipt. I also have to pay about AUD 22 for shipping :-|

So you're back in Australia? What was the last straw - the bandwidth or the coup d'état?
Cheers, Vikram.

The bandwidth still sucks. the coup was something of a non-event. It's business as usual, with the government and military faffing around trying to figure out what to do next and generally ballsing it up. Witness the recent shenanigans with the currency, foreign investments and visas. The fiasco with the new airport was long coming, although it's still surprising just how quickly it all fell apart after it was opened.

I recently bought a new computer with XP Pro and got one of those Vista upgrade coupons that I'm about to send off. This whole thing about not being able to install a clean copy of Vista is annoying (I *never* upgrade an installation) but it got me thinking: does upgrading invalidate your license to use the old version of Windows i.e. if I have problems with Vista, can I go back to my old copy of XP? Also, given that the copy of Windows is licensed to that particular PC, can I run XP and Vista side-by-side on two different partitions? This whole Vista thing is really starting to cheese me off. There's no real reason why I need to upgrade other than to get DirectX 10 and games for that won't be coming out for a while. Even then, I suspect my 8800 GTS will run them pretty well anyway under DX9

I don't know about Vista upgrade editions, but I recently installed Windows 2000 upgrade edition on an old machine for testing. It didn't require an older Windows version to be installed, but prompted me to insert a non-upgrade CD of Win98 or NT before starting the installation (I didn't find Win98, but fortunately it accepted a Win XP CD).

I ran Vista RC1 for a while. And then... (I'm going to say it, sorry) I took it off my laptop and put XP Pro back on. Just built a new server and a new workstation for home. Both of which are running Fedora Core 6 (Linux) and I couldn't be happier. Why would I want to install an OS that is only worth getting so that I could buy that same companies security software. If they didn't do it right to start with, why would I trust them to fix it. Please don't assume that I am just trying to bash MS. So far, in my life, I've bought at least 5 copies of every Microsoft OS. (Except Win ME) I've also bought several copies of each Server OS along the way. I've dished out an extreme amount of money for virtually the same thing, just tweaked for new hardware, mostly. I can't understand doing it anymore. Especially when I need a minimum of 1 GB RAM just to run the thing, let alone do anything useful. For the first time in my life I am actually saying no to MS. As a matter of fact, I am pondering what to do with the T-shirts that we had printed up last time, for my business. I've got a nice Microsoft OEM System Builder logo on them (bigger than all of the other logos) and I would be ashamed to ever wear one again. I had to share... sorry... go ahead flame away.

Complain to your retailer. They decide how much, if any of hte cost to eat for you. Could be worse, I've heard of someone having to pay $29 US for their upgrade copy since the cloneshop wasn't willing to pay a cent of it.

I s'pose I could but I've got more than enough hassle in my life right now without going out looking for more of it :| Ya just *know* they're going to turn around and say it's nothing to do with them. It's a bit annoying if that's actually the case. It's a FragBox from Falcon NorthWest which cost over $4K so one can understand their position, given such thin margins

Well there's your problem, you bought a ripoff in a box. Having already IIRC soaked you for something like a grand, and using inferior quality parts to the DIY used in the comparison, what's another $20 down the rat hole.

Yah, I know it was ridiculously expensive but I had some rather specific requirements that I can't have met here in Thailand (at least not without a lot of fscking around). I don't have the time to learn how to build a machine from scratch, especially not a high-performance small form factor one, so it was just a case of paying the extra money to get one built. The actual box itself was about $3800 but shipping was quite painful. Awasu just closed a big deal[^] so I figured I might spoil myself a bit :jig:

Try Ubuntu also. I am very pleased with it, although it gave me a hard time installing the DLink WiFi card. Thomas

Actually, the fact that you mentioned Australian dollars was not the only reason I asked if you were back - your bio says your location is Australia. I guess you never changed it when you moved to Thailand. :) Just a shot in the dark, but were you British-educated?
Cheers, Vikram.

Brings back memories! :~ Not all good ones. X| I remember going through Pantip and being accosted by mobs of hawkers trying to sell me "sexy movies". :sigh: I decided that I would try to back them down by asking for "sexy movies" of them. X| When asked if I wanted a "sexy movie" I responded with "sexy movie you" and pointed at them. :omg: After repeating this a few times they would realize what I was asking for, blush and say no. :-O Since I wear a palm frond pith helmet, popular with up-country farmers -- the kind you see the North Vietnamese Regulars wearing on the American War documentaries -- I was remembered. I actually walked through Pantip a few months later and didn't get any offers of "sexy movies" from any of the hawkers. Apparently they remembered me as the crazy farang who wanted to see them in a "sexy movie".

Well, your English is very good - nearly indistinguishable from a native speaker's, and waay better than the average Japanese's. The reason I asked now is your use of the word faffing. You haven't answered my question yet. ;)

I guess Mr. T wasn't being honest when he vouched for the contractors being able to fix the minor discrepancies before opening. If I remember correctly he made the Bangkok Post retract the stories about the international inspectors finding cracks in the run ways and taxi ways or face criminal prosecution for slandering him. X| Typical Mr. T style!
