It's not a matter of fine tuning, the worry is that it is going to go off the rails completely. Look at Venus, a similar planet to ours with surface temperatures of 200 deg C. We don't really know why they are so different, but it does have a lot of greenhouse gasses. .

Does being 41 million km closer to the sun help that any? :)

hmm I saw a show the other night where the scientists obtained global warming evidence from ice cores. Aren't those cores regional?

I meant to say IN tall grassy fields. Its just what I imagine when people say "its for the children" or bring children into a political subject. Oh its for the children. Oh ok I will do anything for the children, I don't want to be viewed as a scumbag for not helping the children. Ok we will need your wallet and freedoms and whatever else you have. Oh yes, whatever you say as long as its for the children and polar bears.

You won't be. Just your usual ignorant self spouting off about that which you don't understand.

Common sense…. Surely common sense dictates that an expert on some subject knows more about it than a layman and as such his opinion should be valued over that of the layman; even if the layman happens to be you! If 1000's of experts concur then the argument – common sense would dictate – is all the stronger. The earth is a big system and as such has lots of “momentum”. By the time the problem is evident to stubborn small minded people such as yourself it’s too late to fix it on any reasonable time scale.

The evidence in the ice cores is contained in air bubbles. It gives a snapshot of the atmospheric composition at points in the past. The ice is local but atmospheric composition is global.

“Global warming” is a simple name given to a complex phenomenon. You can’t expect a catchy two word name to capture all the complexities of global warming any more than you should think that the name Henize captures all aspects of your personality. Here’s something I think you should be able to grasp however: “global warning” referrs to the average global temperature. The average can increase even though some of the individual elements that comprise the average decrease.

The two (global warming and another ice age) need not be incompatible. Many scientists believe that the global climate is a metastable system and as such global warming triggering an ice age ice not a contradiction or even necessarily particularly surprising. Do some reading and stop thinking so simplistically based on nothing but (underdeveloped) intuition.

I don't completely deny global warming but I think it is overly hyped in a way that makes you feel less angry when you end up paying extremely high prices at the pump. Hillery Clinton may become president and she clearly said that she wants to take the profits of the oil companies. Unless she plans on nationalizing America's oil companies she will end up heavily taxing them. The oil companies will not reduce the price for oil so the tax will rest on the shoulders of the consumers. The consumers will probably not gripe too much since the money is going to be used to help reduce global warming. I think it is a load of crap. The government is extremely inefficient and wasteful and it is likely that most of the money will not go to research as such. They are wetting the palate for tax consumption.

If petrol is a major cause of global warming then it seems that we've been paying too little for it and should consider the rise justified (assuming the rise is because of global warming). It’s like taxes on tobacco: one of the reasons there is so much tax on them is to offset the cost placed on the healthcare system by smokers.

I used to be really against smoking and thought smokers were stupid and needed to be punished. Now as a smoker my self I now understand why they smoke and no longer discriminate against smokers. I'm not a heavy smoker, it only cost me about 2 dollars a day to keep up my habit. The taxes on tobacco(especially in the states) is unwarranted. Americans pay health insurance instead of government taxes to help pay for their medical bills. In my state the tobacco tax supposedly goes to education. People know that smokers are addicted and will pay a high price for their cigs. The problem is that if they keep it up there will be a thriving black market for tobacco just like all the other drugs. Society would end up loosing money because the cost of the police actions to stop the black market would outweigh the income made by the tax.

I too, until recently, was a smoker. I don't discriminate. I also think the high prices are 100% justified: just because I was a smoker doesn't mean I have to think they should be cheap.

I too, until recently, was a smoker. I don't discriminate. I also think the high prices are 100% justified: just because I was a smoker doesn't mean I have to think they should be cheap.

Four dollars a pack is my limit, if I am unable to find reasonable quality cigs then I will resort to pipe tobacco. I am not ready to quit, the effects of withdraw would be damaging to my attitude and motivation. I have ordered a half-pound of powered kava root from Hawaii recently and it should be here within the next couple days. Perhaps it may help ease withdraw symptoms and it would be a great aid when I do want to quit. I cant wait to try that kava, I've read it tastes like dirt but thats no big deal because its not something you sip on and the reward may be greater than the punishment on my taste buds.

From what i understand that doesn't completely explain the vast temperature difference. Venus has an atmosphere made up of greenhouse gasses.

From what I understand the mai n explaination for the temperature difference is it's atmosphere composed of greenhouse gasses.

Global warming is just a bunch of overly hyped BS. Its just a way to get you to hand over your wallet in the name of the polar bears and the future children of the world who wont be able to chase butterflies in tall grassy fields if we don't pay up. I won't fall for it and I don't care what people tell me. I won't believe it until I experience warm(60F) rainy days in February for more than one year. Right now its much colder than the average temperature and it snowing like crazy like a normal winter day.
