I do, I do, I do get paranoid. I just don't want to ruin it because of it because it sounds interesting.

I wasn't joking. There's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of paranoia.

Thanks for the reply, Christian. I have requested the specification and am aware of the demons of poorly detaled ones. Now, 30%!, wow, I am out of touch. How do you handle delivery of the final product? Per full payment or by providing a working demo that may lock or...?

I give them the exe, then they pay 33%. Then I give them the source code, and they pay the remainder.

Interesting. I have not considered releasing the source. Shouldn't that up the price somewhat? It seems to make a big difference to me.

Then I hope you're not charging very much. If people pay you to write something, they own the source. At least, that's my attitude.

I have been asked by a large overseas company (reputable in principle) to develop a custom app. I have not done this kind of thing before and would like comments from experienced CPians. I shouldn't have a problem with the price tag: work hours + resources. However, should I ask for a written contract? A 10% upfront fee? Payment/delivery schedule? Keep in mind that the whole transaction will be done via email. As always, thank you all.

Yes, in the most natural way possible, e.g., in the middle of the conversation, say it, "BTW, would you prefer sending me some form of a standard contract you may have, or should I send you mine?"

I'd ask for both, although in my experience, companies are *very* sensitive to paying anything upfront in some countries (although I had no problem with some other countries).

It's a joke, it's well known around here that I had a bad experience doing RAC work a few years ago
