What roles in society do you think most of today's software developers would have occupied in times before the electronic computer existed?

Depends: probably an artisan or craftsman of some sort, perhaps with an artistic bent. The century or culture would also make a difference.

I first read the subject as "...of the pasta, and I thought the Flying Spaghetti Monster had made a second coming.

I wonder that about me myself. I'd say court jester, many people say "teacher". I could live with these :)

I would very likely have been a lawyer. I am something of a pedant and stickler for technicalities. I was inspired in high school when I read Dickens' David Copperfield, and the firm of proctors he joined. We lived in proctor street at the time, and it seemed a little like a message to me. Stupidly I allowed myself to be dissuaded by a friend who tried studying law after school, and I took up something I knew a lot about and was interesting. Now that I am studying law, I cannot see how anyone can find anything boring about it.

Well, let's see... I was a professional musician, and when I got tired of boxed macaroni & cheese I next spent a decade teaching sales. In 1988 I realized I couldn't continue to stay drunk all the time (suggested for the first career, required for the second) and since PCs had now been in existence for a few years, I decided to become a programmer. And now, of course, I'm working on the next career, "life after programming." :-D

I'd've probably been some sort of engineer. I'd guess it's the most common degree among my greybeard coworkers.

My first thought was directing traffic. I had a professor in college who always used the 4 cars stop at a 4 way stop scenario all the freaking time. I would probably stick with photography or go to medical school. Maybe I would just join the circus.

Likely the the exact same thing that most of them are now - unappreciated people that do all of the hard thinking and hard work that other people higher up the food chain get all the credit and cash for. :)    Peace!

I definately would have been a composer. Probably a mediocre one, obsessed with the fact that another composer was so much more talented than I was. After many failed schemes to get ahead, It would finally be too much for me and I would scheme to kill... Oh wait, I saw that in a movie. Maybe I would have been a poor Irish stowaway on a large early 20th century cruise liner when it hits an Iceberg...

I grew a beard when I was 26, and it had two solid white strips in it that looked like a Fu Manchu. Apparently I was too impatient to wait and skipped right past the grey period at an early age. :-D
