I am looking at getting a new monitor this year. I would like to get a monitor with the resolution of 1680x1050. It will either be a 20 inch or 22 inch. This acer looks like a good deal and it seems to be of good quality. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2549197&Tab=2&NoMapp=0[^] I have seen that same monitor at bestbuy but it was not set at its native resolution so I couldn't see how good it really was. What do you think? I would like any advice you have.

Throwing in my vote for the Samsung 226BW. Roommate got one of these a few days ago, and it is absolutely beautiful. It sounds like this is the Samsung monitor you were considering as an alternative earlier in the thread. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001096[^] But the quality of LCDs seems to be going up across the board nowadays, so hopefully you'll be happy with whatever you decide. :)

Oh man, I got to have that Samsung! The specs exceed my expectations and the price is right. I am definitely going to get that later this year. The price might go down which will be great.

I don't get why everyone is after 16:9 monitors. Visual Studio works best at 4:#, in my book. I have 1600x1200, and it works a treat. I have 2 x 1200x1024 as well ( and room for more, if I ever want to buy more ). I have a Samsung SyncMaster 204B. It still looks great after a year, and when I did get a dead scanline, they sent me a new monitor, right away. I have only good things to say about Samsung monitors.

I really like 1200x1600 it lets me see much more code on the screen at one time, and with some of the code I have to work on, and a small font I might be able to see a whole method on the screen at one time. :doh:

The reason i didn't get it here (canada) was that tigerdirect doesn't have a return for this product, if it's bad i have to go through Acer. After reading about others problems there i've held off.

Not much, i might do a couple FPS's ever couple years. I liked the Hitman series and just finished FEAR. I'm waiting for Project Offset[^]to become more than vapour-ware. Funny enough the one i play the most is CivII. :) If i'm doing a lot of compiling i'll sometimes fire it up and play durring builds.

I have the AL2423W[^] (24", 1920x1200) in the same range and highly recommend it. If the one you've chosen is up to the same standards (and there's no reason to expect it won't be, given my experience of Acer) it should be fine. :)

I find with 4:3 monitors that I never have sufficient width to dock the displays I want. The code editor just gets "squeazed" too much at the sides, and I end up having to autohide displays - which bugs the hell out of me. I'm currently using an Acer AL2423W 24" widescreen TFT (1920x1200) and believe me once you've worked on that you wouldn't want to go back to a 4:3. :laugh:

Be careful - the AL2416W doesn't have a DVI input (it's analogue only). The AL2423W (which I have) has both. :cool:

Space is significantly less important that resolution, IMO.

Damn right - especially with laptops. It's hard to get 15" laptop screens (the biggest you want, IMO) with better than 1400x1050 or 1440x900 these days, but I seem to remember Dell used to do up to 1900xsomething in 15", they definitely did 1600x1200 in 15".

I bought an Acer laptop in November and I am extremely satisfied with it. People have told me Acer is crap but they seem to make good products. I would really love to have two 22 inch monitors. Perhaps I can find the money somehow.

Try having less than 300 characters per line in hte code editor, then ;P With my 20" TFT @ work (1600x1200), I can get up to 150chars/line in Visual Studio, but all I have taking up horizontal space is the code editor and the solution explorer, class view and resource view, which I dock so they're tabbed items in the same space. However, as I don't do too much GUI programming (or 'normal' Windows programming, for that matter), I don't really care about having designer windows around - the code's the only thing that matters!

Maybe, indeed. My experience of Acer laptops has been good so far (I'm on my second - and 8215WLMi; before that I had an 8006LMi). They are extremely easy to maintain and upgrade (diskl, memory etc. are accessible), and I've no complaints about reliability other than that I've yet to have any laptop last more than 2 1/2 years of the sort of use I give them, and in that respect Acer are no exception. :rose:

I just ordered a Samsung 225BW. It was one of the few 22-inch monitors that has a height-adjustable stand. It was only (*)$290 at Amazon. It'll be here tomorrow. (*)Actually, the cheapest price for a new one was $269, but the vendor had a less than spectacular customer rating, so I chose to go with a fulfillment from Amazon itself.

Except for the small fraction of items on sale (typically slowly processed rebates, or bundled with an AV program that'll hit you up with a charge if you don't cancel the subscription) TD is generally one of the more expensive online retailers.

Actually, Visual Studio works best on 3 4:3 Monitors: one for the editor environment, one for MSDN and one for all the tool windows. I prefer 2 4:3 over one 16:9.
