Welcome to my own personal hell.

It's even worse when you're the tech support guy for your family.

That's my personal hell too. Maybe we should swap, I support your family and you support mine. Then my family won't curse MY name every time they blue-screen.

I was at my mother in law's house recently for a BBQ, and some completely random person comes up to me and says 'You know computers? can you make me a webpage?' Turns out it was a relative of a friend of my mother in law's work colleague! AARRGGHH indeed!
I have no blog...

Yes! Fortunately I haven't been socialising much, and I work at a very small company where most of the guys like thir own tinkering, but I know exactly what you mean. "Oh you're in computers, blah blah, blah." I came to enjoy disappointing people even if they were disappointed in me, after being told I don't know how to help them.

Yesterday in the morning, my colleagues were complaining that their server (we have one separate LAN for the sales team) wasn't booting and they were just waiting for me to arrive. I wish I could have asked them why in the hell would they wait for me. I've now arranged for an annual maintenance contract with a hardware support company. I am sick of installing new software for others, getting the virus out of their computers, uninstalling the six to ten search bars that they somehow manage to install in IE. Whenever something won't work the way they want it to, they hunt for me :(

I feel your pain. In my case it would be: "Why do all my relatives think I can magically fix all their stupid computer problems just because I am a programmer?" Most of the problems caused by themselves, I might add. Like I said, I feel your pain, man. :sigh: Cheers,

No... its even worse than that when you are the "clean-up" for the "tech-support" for the family... you know.. the cousin/brother/uncle who thinks he knows a great deal more than he really knows, and makes the situation 10 times worse before screaming to you to offer "advice" but expect you to fix it so they he/she it can take credit for the fix. :)

Oh yeah. My mother-in-law has Parkinson's, and you can only imagine what she does when she tries to move the mouse... Even Microsoft never envisioned that kind of mouse usage... and then she has this neighbor that works on her computer that thinks he knows about computers... He once told me her computer was slow because she had stored too many JPEG's from her digital camera on the hard drive and they were bogging it down. Give me a break! At any rate, I then get called in for cleanup after the neighbor, my clueless sister-in-laws, and my wife have had a crack at it (at least my wife is smart enough to leave things alone if she is not sure what to do). Been there, done that. :sigh: Cheers,
