Ah, well, you're right! It's friday again. I just can'z believe it. My week was so short. Monday: Took a day off. Yesterday no work, tomorrow no work, there's no reason to work the single day in between. Tuesday: May 1st, official holiday. Wednesday: I actually did something useful! Thursday: Had to go to a meeting in Mainz, spent four hours on the train. Friday: I'll actually do something useful!

Take this opportunity to know the difference between "its" and "it's". "Its" is the possessive term of "it" and so when you tell "its FRIDAY", it's absurd. Unless you meant to state that this Friday belongs to your dog, or something alike. Whereas "it's" is a single word which is formed by contracting two words, "it + is" or "it + was", which is read contextually.

I corrected somebody a long time back, and got shouted at. I was even branded a spelling/grammar Nazi, and I have steered clear ever since. I do succumb to punning from time to time, though. :-O

      Cheers, Vıkram.

Welcome to my world. My wife is a proofreader and some of her habits have stuck with me. You really should read Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynn Truss - it's a wonderful book.

I've seen it, Pete, but never got around to buying it. I'll keep your recommendation in mind, though.

            Cheers, Vıkram.

Don't be discouraged, Vikram - wear the Grammar Nazi badge proudly. Someone has to defend the purity of the language against the unclean masses of illiterates who threaten to destroy it. Words have very specific meanings, usage, and spelling, and those who use them incorrectly do so at the risk of clarity for us all. Strike a blow for clear communication, and carry on! Let those who protest do so in writing, if they can. Who's going to read their ignorant missives anyway...;)

This ranting is at least as old as the roman empire, and noone's managed to stop their language from drifting in meaning. Guess what, civilization survived quite well.

I will never concede the point. I have watched the language degenerate for 50 years, and seen misunderstanding grow by leaps and bounds, simply because one party to a discussion understands the language perfectly, and the other only vaguely. Yes, languages evolve, and should as a society's experience grows richer and the need to express new experience accumulates. But in a language where different nuances are attached to words that have similar, but not exactly the same meanings, it is important that people understand the differences. Fewer and fewer people can claim that knowledge, and those that don't are too ignorant to understand that they are missing somethings. I've seen fights break out that way, more so every year.
