Hi, How important is the working atmosphere at your work place to you? Does these factors decide whether you quit your job or not? 1. Good air conditioning 2. Comfortable chairs and desk 3. PC with good configuration 4. Availability of good food at work or nearby. 5. Access to internet without restrictions 6. Hygienic surroundings. 7. Spacious work place 8. Descent pay 9. Opportunity to learn new technology related to work 10.Friendly colleagues I feel all the above would be close to a perfect job. But unfortunately I do not have most them at my work place. 1: depends where you are. 2: nice to have. 3: a must. 4: nice to have: started taking food in. 5: nice to have. 6: ? 7: lucky you. 8: EXCELLENT pay or go elsewhere. 9: should do in own time. 10: who cares: these are not people I'd choose as friends :-) And the absolute must for me: 11: close proximity to convenient public transport; in my case must be close to a central line station and must be able to go door-to-door in under an hour.

Well so far I have 1,2,3,4,6,7,8 and 10 (with a little 9 thrown in). I work for a fantastic organization, 4 months ago they purchased all the programmers new computers with: 1. Dual Intel Duo-Core processors 2. 4 GB Memory 3. 2 250 GB HD 4. ATI X1950XTX video card 5. DVD-RW+ 6. Dual 21 inch monitors I know the dual Duo-Core processors is over-kill but it's nice to have. As for the spacious work area, granted we work in cubicles (as do most employees) but the cubicles are at least twice as big as anything I've worked in in my career. As for the pay, I just got a raise that moved me to the middle upper-class for this area (my pay went up about $950 a month) and it's going to go up again this year, they've hired a company to evaluate our pay based on the "norm" for this state, which takes into account Microsoft on the other side of the state. All in all, this is far and away the BEST organization I've ever worked for and I couldn't be happier.

We've got it really, really nice where I work. When we built our current building 7-8 years ago, they planned for and built a fitness room and locker facilities. We've got club-quality equipment, with a two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stepper, a stationary bike, and a rower. We also have a nice Universal-style gym and a set of free weights and benches. The space is nice and roomy as well. We've had people using the all of the equipment, and there's floor space left over for a line-dancing class. On top of that, our location is ideal. We've got 8-10 running routes around our building, ranging from flat to hilly, roads or trails, and from 3 to 8 miles. I can commute to work on my bicycle (I live 12 miles away) and stay on bike paths most of the way, if I want. These are major inducements for me. Every time the crap starts running too fast and deep, I try to remember why I'm here: to run and work out at lunch :-D.

I've got two adoring fur covered critters and the best little boy in the world to keep me company 11. commute under one minute 12. Work from home.

I company I worked for in the middle of the tech bubble did the same thing. I had just gotten a 20% pay raise for moving to a new job then a 30% raise the same year to bring me up to the average for that position.

I am an admin on my machine, and even on some of the servers I work on. We have an on-site work-our facility and things are soon to gete ven better as we will be moving into our new building (a 235,000 square foot facility with on-site daycare and full service cafeteria) and all Application Developers get an office with an actual door on it. Last years Christmas party they reserved a HUGE banquet room at the most expensive hotel in town, fully catered w/ a wet bar and gave away over $5000 in "prizes" and every employee got a 1GB MP3 player as their gift. We have a huge company picnic each year (this one you can bring your entire family) and of course its fully catered as well. The nicest part about this organization (aside from REALLY taking care of their IT Department) is when it comes to development and releases of in-house software is we actually have a strict process for pushing updates to the users, this makes it so nice for the developers.

Very friendly location. 7) Well, I don't share my office, the others all do. 8) Pay is rarely Descending, though not always Ascending either, but okay for the area 9) R&D... I am getting that tingle again... :-D 10) They are very friendly, as long as you can avoid religious conversation with one, say anything bad about java to another, or Linux to several.

prioritize them, decide what you can live with, what you cannot, what would make the job more comfortable or less comfortable and then decide. No one is holding you there. My last job had perfect for everything except pay, friendliness and internet access. One would think it was a better job but the friendliness issue was a major one since the boss was abusive, no one trusted anyone, micromanaged, underpaid, everyone was treated as if they were less important than the computers or the mahogany furniture -- which was probably true. I decided to leave, and I left. :)

More monitors is always a good thing. I have two 19's right now and I am trying to get either a 21 inch to add or a third 19. The quality of one monitor has to be good, the other two don't matter. I now will not work for a company unless I have at least two monitors. My 2cents worth!

More monitors is always a good thing. I have two 19's right now and I am trying to get either a 21 inch to add or a third 19. The quality of one monitor has to be good, the other two don't matter. I now will not work for a company unless I have at least two monitors. My 2cents worth!

Yeah I was just upgraded to 3 21" LCD panels. 2 of them are at 1600x1200 the middle one is 1200x1600 so I can fit more lines of code on the monitor at one time. It works really well.

1. Important, but not critical. You can always bring your own fan. 2. I think this is essential for coders. 3. Required. I just had to pull tooth and nail to get my RAM upgraded, and I work for a computer manufacturing company. Go figure. 4. Could care less. I live two miles from home and usually go home for lunch. We do have an onsite cafeteria that is pretty good. I get scrambled eggs with fresh veggies each morning. 5. I used to work for a company that 'selectivly' watched some people and not others. I got busted for going to CNN. If I want to take 10 minutes to read the news, so what? So I find this important. 6. I don't need it ultra-clean but obviously bad hygeine can lead to sickness. My boss chews tobacco which seem a bit unhygeinic to me, but it's allowed. 7. If you work with multiple towers, required. I hate kicking towers each time I move my chair. 8. You have to pay the bills. However, if you love what you do, you can work for less and get better satisfaction. 9. We don't really have that here that I know of but I can get reimbursed for training, classes etc which is nice. 10. I don't have friends at work because of the age difference, but no one is really unfriendly. I usually sit with my headphones on most of the day. Someone mentioned a quiet workplace which I have to say is important. I work in a line of cubicles with soccer moms who need to discuss American Idol, Gray's Anatomy, and their kids at least 2 hours a day.
