I've got two adoring fur covered critters and the best little boy in the world to keep me company 11. commute under one minute 12. Work from home.

I company I worked for in the middle of the tech bubble did the same thing. I had just gotten a 20% pay raise for moving to a new job then a 30% raise the same year to bring me up to the average for that position.

I am an admin on my machine, and even on some of the servers I work on. We have a huge company picnic each year (this one you can bring your entire family) and of course its fully catered as well. The nicest part about this organization (aside from REALLY taking care of their IT Department) is when it comes to development and releases of in-house software is we actually have a strict process for pushing updates to the users, this makes it so nice for the developers.

Very friendly location. 7) Well, I don't share my office, the others all do. 8) Pay is rarely Descending, though not always Ascending either, but okay for the area 9) R&D... I am getting that tingle again... :-D 10) They are very friendly, as long as you can avoid religious conversation with one, say anything bad about java to another, or Linux to several.

prioritize them, decide what you can live with, what you cannot, what would make the job more comfortable or less comfortable and then decide. No one is holding you there. My last job had perfect for everything except pay, friendliness and internet access. One would think it was a better job but the friendliness issue was a major one since the boss was abusive, no one trusted anyone, micromanaged, underpaid, everyone was treated as if they were less important than the computers or the mahogany furniture -- which was probably true. I decided to leave, and I left. :)

More monitors is always a good thing. I have two 19's right now and I am trying to get either a 21 inch to add or a third 19. The quality of one monitor has to be good, the other two don't matter. I now will not work for a company unless I have at least two monitors. My 2cents worth!

Yeah I was just upgraded to 3 21" LCD panels. 2 of them are at 1600x1200 the middle one is 1200x1600 so I can fit more lines of code on the monitor at one time. It works really well.

1. Important, but not critical. You can always bring your own fan. 2. I think this is essential for coders. 3. Required. I just had to pull tooth and nail to get my RAM upgraded, and I work for a computer manufacturing company. Go figure. 4. Could care less. I live two miles from home and usually go home for lunch. We do have an onsite cafeteria that is pretty good. I get scrambled eggs with fresh veggies each morning. 5. I used to work for a company that 'selectivly' watched some people and not others. I got busted for going to CNN. If I want to take 10 minutes to read the news, so what? So I find this important. 6. I don't need it ultra-clean but obviously bad hygeine can lead to sickness. My boss chews tobacco which seem a bit unhygeinic to me, but it's allowed. 7. If you work with multiple towers, required. I hate kicking towers each time I move my chair. 8. You have to pay the bills. However, if you love what you do, you can work for less and get better satisfaction. 9. We don't really have that here that I know of but I can get reimbursed for training, classes etc which is nice. 10. I don't have friends at work because of the age difference, but no one is really unfriendly. I usually sit with my headphones on most of the day. Someone mentioned a quiet workplace which I have to say is important. I work in a line of cubicles with soccer moms who need to discuss American Idol, Gray's Anatomy, and their kids at least 2 hours a day.

Comfortable chairs and desk (no, 1942 surplus) 3. PC with good configuration (no, we're not admins on our own machines) 5. Access to internet without restrictions (no, severely locked down) 6. Hygienic surroundings. (they try to keep it clean but the "animals" here do their best to task the cleaning staff). 7. Spacious work place (average at best) 8. Descent pay (Less than I've made elsewhere) 9. Opportunity to learn new technology related to work

Not really. The employees at my workplace have enough professionalism to keep this kind of thing at home. Web site visits are recorded, but logs are never looked at unless there is a good reason for doing so... Of course, this is a small company (~50 employees) and much of our work requires unfettered access to the internet for research purposes.

I guess I lucked out. When my company's DoD contract expired last year (they actually missed the paperwork deadline by 2 months :wtf:) I *decided* to find another job. I wound up getting a job that allows me to work from home 2 days a week, got me an MSDN subscription and scores a yes on all 10 items listed. I can even say "yes" to the proposed item 11 (beer on tap) on the days I work from home. :)
