She was orphaned and since there was no way to adopt her it was that or she would have starved to death, a mechanism nothing more.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not marry the Prophet because of any threat of starvation, in fact her father (AbuBakir AlSidiq) was well off at the time.

Islam seems a very regimented religion to me, the way you guys seem required to interject this sort of stuff all the time.

If her father was alive, that points towards it being in line with the way society worked at the time. I guess that's only a problem if you want to claim Mohammed was anything more than an example of a person of his times.

Even this Wikipedia entry doesn't quite claim that. I plainly knew what you were talking about, but even Catholics don't literally believe that nowadays, I don't believe. Certainly the vast majority of Christians understand Jesus words to mean that He was indicating a ritual to remember His blood and body, not that it literally becomes that.

From article:
According to the Roman Catholic Church, when the bread and wine are consecrated in the Eucharist, they cease to be bread and wine, and become instead the body and blood of Christ. The empirical appearances are not changed, but the reality is.

I can't speak for everyone, I am saying that you're making a generalisation that is not the case in at least 95% of cases. I am not claiming it's 100% untrue, I am saying it's a rare belief, and so not one you can assume when you speak to someone, as you did above.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly, are you saying this is not a belief of the Catholic church? Or that this belief morphed into something else? If so than many references need to be changed and someone needs to get the word out, as I ran into a several who explained their beliefs to me.

The Catholic church used to believe that, no Protestant believes it ( which means, all other Christian churches ), and I thought that the Catholic church had also softened it's position on this. At a minimum, you need to say Catholic, not Christian, they are very different things.

yes, morality is definately a construct of society, that's my point. I'd still think it was wrong, but I'm a product of a society that causes me to think that. I also assume that his 9 yo wife was similar in terms of mental age to my 10 yo daughter, when the truth is she probably had adulthood thrust upon her far younger than kids do today. I read an interesting book by Neil Postman on the subject of the construct of childhood, and how it was unknown in the West as well, 1000 years ago. Childhood as a seperate stage of life, or something to be cherished, is a relatively new idea, and in many ways, it revolves around the idea of reading. If adult society is build on the ability to read and write to pass on and store information, one is not ready to take part until one has had time to learn how to do these things.

So that's why I should start developing some issues with my mother. She taught me to read and write years before I attended school.
