I was analyzing the smartphones Qtek 9090[^] and Qtek 9100[^]. The first has a good processor (Intel PXA263 400 MHz), but comes with Windows Mobile 2003 SE. The second has a weak processor (TI OMAP 850, 200 Mhz processor), but comes with Windows Mobile 5.0. Reading about Windows Mobile[^], I discovered that it supports .Net Framework after version 5.0. I know that I can't upgrade from Windows Mobile 2003 SE to Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0, by device limitations... Of course, I need buy one these because I will develop something in .Net, so the Qtek 9090 is near of to be excluded. But, with the good processor and good price (here in Brazil) I was thinking if is possible install the .Net "Compact" framework in the Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Recommendations? Hints?

In regards to the OS of your palm device, if your going to use it for developing .Net applications then defiantly The Qtek9100 with Windows Mobile 5.0 would be the go. I'm not sure exactly how badly the less powerful processor would hinder your applications performance but im sure it wouldnt be too drastic.

Don't dismiss the TI OMAP 850 on Mhz rating alone. If I remember rightly it comes with an insanely powerful DSP (Digital Signal Processor) built into the chip, so depending on your application (e.g. mobile phone, voice type apps) it may actually be better, with the right programming interface to it in the Board Support Package. On the other hand I would avoid the .Net Compact Framework altogether at the moment, we looked at it 9 months ago for redeveloping our Windows CE based product and it's capabilities are just too limited, no COM interop, no this, no that. We stuck with C++ for the CE side and C for the embedded part. Have fun with the project :)

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

.NET Compact Framework 2.0 is supported on Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC and all releases of Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6. .NET Compact Framework 1.0 is supported on Pocket PC 2002 and both Pocket PC and Smartphone versions of Windows Mobile 2003, 5.0 and 6. As I recall there's a version of Compact Framework in the Windows Mobile 2003 SE ROM, but cannot recall if it's the latest service pack. Don't bother with CF 1.0 before SP2.
