There are lots of us on all the boards that want to scream, "HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF GOOGLE?" I think most of us who are regulars in the Lounge probably enjoy seeing advanced questions. I always appreciate something new rather than reading 5 posts in one day of, 'can you give me the code to connect to my database?' [EDIT] Okay, and I am going to start REALLY going off on those urgents/cross-posters/hlp plz if they have been a member for longer than 1 month. [/EDIT] -- modified at 16:20 Monday 2nd July, 2007

I've just been watching you having fun on the other forums. Don't stop there though - please destroy the txtspkrs as well. They deserve all they get for not knowing what a vowel is. They seem to think that vowels are something that posh people go to the toilet via.

Well , it's obviously a matter of taste. But the latest isn't always the greatest, and I would normally like to follow threads where there are some activity. It's unbelievably bad UI design that one have to go through pages after pages to follow a thread. That's why the forums (except for the Lounge) doesn't attract any interesting conversation. The problem you mention about necroing an old thread doesn't really happen that often if at all.

Try thread view, then you can browse only what is new, with many more per page. But usually the most recent threads have activity.

Noooooo.... the reason why most threads don't get any interesting conversation is the gimmee factor. The poster wants an answer, once they have it, they could care less about expanding on it, or touching additional related subjects. Then you have the poster pushing a purpose, twisting any thread back to his desired outcome... "sure, I do it, see my library...." So converstations are short and to the point. More than half are folks wanting you to do their homework, rather depressing to wade through. I try to post now and then, so do others, the fact that anyone is posting after such a depressing amount of gimmeee posts, shows this place is worth it. Or you can go elsewhere and get the gimmee factor there too, ask your question, and someone can answer it for 9.95!

I am not sure how you hope to find a board which somehow happens to be at exactly your level, and manages to bar entry to newbies. The MSDN forums are far worse than there, in terms of questions easily answered with google.

The "most recent post" approach promotes the atrocious practice of "bumping" a thread to the top in order to get attention.

-Atlas Shrugged, Ayn RandIn addition to what Jeff mentioned, you can use Thread View with CPhog[^] and get a much better experience. Basically we mix the thread view and the dynamic view. You click on a thread header and the page will expand with all of the replies, which you can click on and navigate as you normally would. It's pretty nifty.

:-D Well, the "IMO" is implied - much UI is obviously a matter of taste. I just find it a very weird forum structure.

Which means we should probably release a new version. ;P The way to enable that feature is to switch the forums to Thread view, then click on the little Quick Refresh button next to the thread you want to load.
