I'm tempted to say 'Great idea!' but sadly it's going to be abused. Maybe you can make it accessible to Platinum members only - there are only a few of them, and they're all generally good apples.

Again, this is going to be HEAVILY abused. Point #3 mitigates this abuse to a certain extent, but if you want to see an example of this abuse, I suggest you look at the votes I've been garnering in the C# forum. That is abuse in my book. :|

I'm getting as tired as everyone else of the crap that is going on so I'm proposing the following changes: - I've increased the threshold for messages to disappear if marked as spam - Only silver and above members can mark messages as spam - Your IP address can only vote a limited number of times a minute and also a limited number of times a day - Once you hit 5,000 messages then your profile will simply say "over 5,000 messages" Two more thoughts: 1. I'm tempted to add a "Kick this person out of the lounge" button. It would only be accessible by Gold and above members. Just how abused would this be? 2. A kick button would be OK only if it wasn't a permanent action. I think that after some time (TBD), the person should be given another chance. There also wouldn't be anything to stop someone from creating a new account every time they get kicked. I do think that the kick button would be abused to some degree and I don't think there is any way to avoid it.

It's a good idea but there are too many Gold members I feel who haven't deserved that status, perhaps before this is implemented the way status is achieved should be thought out but as of yet I cannot think of a way to do this because you have people such as Marc who's posted literally hundreds of articles and messages but also just as valuable people like Jeffrey who've posted thousands of messages but due to (laziness) the nature of their work they can't post articles. At least if it were limited to Platinum status, ok a lot of useful people won't be able to Kick people, but at least it's very unlikely to be abused.  Plus for those of us who can't kick people hopefully we have enough respect with those who do so that we can suggest kicks and it could be put to a vote by those Platinum members to get other people's views. Perhaps a page which listed those people who have special priveledges, e.g. those who can delete threads etc deemed deletable would also help those of us who haven't (statistically) built up a reputation to each these priviledges automatically to contact them.

I don't see anyone abusing the existing classification system. Besides, I was looking forward to acheiving the 'grucky stuff behind the fridge' level soon.

There's a spitload of them available; let's limit this to Gold and above.

This should be a power limited to very few as I think it will be heavily abused. Perhaps a better method would involve tracking the percentage of posts tagged as spam/abuse, and raising a flag to moderators when a member scores above a reasonable level. Then limit the banishing power to moderators only.

Considering the number of fake accounts that people can create, I would suggest a two fold solution. (1) An annually non-refundable renewable membership fee. (2) Probationary period of not less than 3 months before the members are awarded a Bronze medal. During this probationary period, voting privileges are denied. If during this probationary period, the junior member has an unacceptably large number of spam or abuse votes especially where messages removed results, their membership is revoked. However, where messages are removed, I would like to see both a highly visible warning message replacing the text of the removed message and a warning e-mail despatched to the member. The member should have right to appeal against any removed messages, or revoked membership in the same sort of way that an employee has right of appeal where disciplinary action has been taken against him/her. Having any extra clickable buttons may not be the best way forward.

:) all good. the other two 1) this could be a good feature, however not all gold/silver members are like those who post here (*cough*friendly*cough*) so i'd put it as a vote where they need say 10 votes to be kicked. then a kick is reported to admin and they can take a better look to see if it is valid or if further action is required for that user. 2) i agree with you chris the rankings would be better if they were based on votes not the post count. what ratio do you have in mind? (im not sure how it work at the moment to be honest) if i answer 2 questions on c++/mfc forum and get Q1 gets 5 Q2 gets 1 (didnt know what i was talking about which is normal X| ) (to keep it simple) just 1 vote for each. both by a new member bronze. How would the 1 affect my 5 and overall score.., would I be left with a 3 for my profile score.? i ask just to see if it could be abused or not like the present system :sigh: Thanks Sam.

The existing system (been in place for at least a year) is one vote per item per IP. What the change would add is X votes per minute total, eg you could only vote for 5 unique articles/messages per minute.

Also regarding the 1 voters, it probably would be a good idea to see who voted for you. It would probably put an end to the 1 voters doing it all around the forums just for fun. High ranks that grant you permissions should be much harder to get, ensuring you've not got retards with rights. Maybe, but even though this is the 'lounging' area one should still try to conduct themselves with maturity. We are not in grade school, even though many tend to act like it.

Maybe, but even though this is the 'lounging' area one should still try to conduct themselves with maturity. We are not in grade school, even though many tend to act like it.

Also regarding the 1 voters, it probably would be a good idea to see who voted for you. It would probably put an end to the 1 voters doing it all around the forums just for fun. High ranks that grant you permissions should be much harder to get, ensuring you've not got retards with rights. 2. I will be replacing the Silver/Gold etc ranking with a ranking based on your participation as an author and as a poster. If you answer questions in the forums that are well received you increase your status; same with your posted articles. You post rubbish and you go down. The only problem with this is how we reward those members who are simply great to have around. The ones who have interesting stories, incitefulinsightful comments, are great moderators of the mood, and whose participation makes CodeProject what it is. Suggestions? -- modified at 10:20 Wednesday 18th July, 2007

After seeing what happened with deleting messages you think people are mature enough to handle a feature to ban people.

I don't give a damn what happens in the Lounge, but I do my best to help people in small ways in the C# forum, and some arsehole is dutifully voting every post of mine down. That is abuse in my book. :|

I don't see anyone abusing the existing classification system. Besides, I was looking forward to acheiving the 'grucky stuff behind the fridge' level soon.

I'd be pleased to pay a little fee (say 15/20 Euros) for membership, but I think most users wouldn't...
