My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkOk... Not sore, per se, but I think it a shame that someone tries to justify a low ball salary and their reasoning is someone else is stupid/pathetic/desperate enough to accept it.

How is it stupid/pathetic/desperate to accept a salary that's 4 times the industry average in your home-town?

It can be, just as in the location perspective that you put it. However, here in southern California it would only be good for someone who is in their junior/senior year in college, but not for a degreed (or multi-degreed) professional with 10+ years of experience.

Yep, I totally agree that it would be an awful salary for anyone living in the States (not just California).

As I replied to Jerry, it depends on where the job's located. If it is a remote contract job and the candidate lives in Trivandrum, India - that'd be an extremely good sum of money.
It isn't and you should not promte it as such. Pardon the two-reply to your post.

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkLike I just asked Jerry, where is it located? If in a major metropolitan area, it would bite, but if the job is located in a rural U.S. area, then it could be a starting point. Again, the bottom line is location :)

Had I meant the pay scale in India I would have said Rupee.
Well, I should have made this clear in my first post - but a lot of Indian salaries are now mentioned in USD :-) Anyway, I got your point - you were talking about a job for a US location. But I was pointing out a corollary that the job could be easily given to a contract developer located in Trivandrum (my home town in India).

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkYou're simply reading too much into what I've posted, Nish. There is a big difference between you justifying a low ball salary and someone "in your hometown" accepting that salary.

Hmmm, 20/hr bites then. My uncle does something with the Parks and Rec out there with youth sports and he pulls down between 60-80K/year, running youth sports programs, with a fairly flexible schedule.

I've noticed that in the Salt Lake City area there has been an over all decline in salaries while at the same time there has been a marked increase in skill set requirements. Is it a trend? Maybe. It could also be an anomaly and will correct itself shortly when those positions remain unfilled.

Agreed. I think it's fun from time to time to mock, berate, gasp at the hubris of some of these HR folks willingness to offer monetary scraps for a skill-set that may have taken years to build.

You've probably not done much contract work then. In my experience and those of people I know, I've never seen any contract work offered in INR terms (though in pretty much every instance, the client was located abroad - not necessarily in the States).

I've never worked for a big employer - it's probably something I may never experience in my career. Not that I mind much now, but it may have helped me earlier on in my career - specially all the politics and social differences of working for a massive company.

Our sysadmin was complaining about this last week. Companies are looking for super admins, but aren't willing to pay the big bucks for qualified people. Just being capable with Active Directory is worth $20 an hour.
