Yeah, I see that Flash is the issue. However, it's not the only program that does it. I'm unconvinced that there isn't some underlying issue, even if it's not just Vista compatibility issues causing some programs to crash and silently disappear.

For a while I thought I was just going mad, but I'm now certain. Vista, at times, just closes programs without telling me why. I know for sure, because this time it was the IE instance I had CP and my mail running in. IE would prompt to ask if you want all tabs closed, and I definately did not see that, so there's no way I clicked it by accident. It's just gone. I guess IE was the weakest link. I can buy into that.

It was Flash. The other app I noticed disappear doesn't have an entry, but this explains where IE went. Funny, unless some CP ads were Flash, I didn't have a site with Flash open.

Current version is 9.0.47.0. Flash regularly has security issues, so you should stay on top of it. I don't think Windows Vista has any 'silently kill application on error' options - you should have seen the 'preparing error report' dialog even if it was a DEP issue. There's a 'problem reports' centre somewhere in Control Panel to allow you to check for solutions which allows the report upload to be deferred (unlike the XP version which required you to be online when the problem occurred). Some devious ISVs are changing the unhandled exception filter and silently exiting, rather than allowing an error report to be prepared, however. I'm sure I read somewhere that some common plugin was doing that, but I can't recall if it was Flash or QuickTime or what.

I recently tried (again) to make Vista my main OS. I put off stuff that needed XP (CE Platform Builder 5.0, remote debugging of a CE app... all MS products, by the way) and made it a couple weeks. I finally had to reboot to XP to get something done, and it felt like I doubled my processor speed and RAM. Even the apps that "work" under Vista are much slower. There are parts of Vista that I like. Even UAC has grown on me as I setup a proper admin account and a user account. But it is surprisingly unsuitable as a replacement for XP. As a new OS, with no legacy strings attached it's not bad, but I feel like if I'm going to put myself through this much transitional pain, I might as well just get a mac with OSX.

At least you could install Flash, I've been trying out Vista and Adobe said it didn't support x64 OSs (although that was perhaps Shockwave rather than Flash).
I just installed Flash on Vista x64 two days ago... That said, i'm now regretting it; really depressing how much Flash ads drag down a fast new machine. :(

Well, I suspect it would work just as well under OSX as it does under Vista. That is to say, not at all. My next laptop for home will probably be a mac. My wife nearly fainted when I told her that.

I am a happier person since swapping to a MacBook Pro and Mac OS X. Just my experience but there you go.

I had my first application crash on XP in a long while the other night and it also happend to be something with flash that resulted in IE crashing.

Yes, Vista is sometimes unstable. My experiences with it: 1. I had Windows Mail that comes bundled with Vista just closes with no apparent reason. It is as if I clicked close on the window, but I didn't. 2, Next thing, and it happend to me 3-4 times in the last 10 month that I am using it, Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition freezes looking dimmed, and no way you can recover it. Even worse, at that time you can not even bring up the Task Manager to kill the process, and this is very strange as it should be available at all times. I have that update for running VS 2005 on Vista installed, so it is not related to that. 3. I select a few files in Windows Explorer, and press SHIFT+DEL to delete it entirely from the disk, it then deletes the whole folder. This has happened a few times, so it is not just a wrong key sequence. 4. Sometimes when I select files and want to copy or move them, I don't have a very clear visual on the files moving. This is really annoying, as my graphic card and computer rendering speed in general is very high. I have no idea if I target the right folder to drop the files to. 5. Sometimes it just doesn't see my DVD device. It says "Device blank" or something. I found in one MS forum that I have to go to Device Manager, uninstall the DVD device and install it again, but then it requires me to reboot the machine. Huh. 6. Many problems with apps and IE/Firefox disappeared after I blocked all instances of Adobe Updater with a firewall , and I mean each and every Adobe application that wants to update itself. Adobe is using many different ways (from running strange named instances to installing the updater under the account that has the permission to contact their site without ever notifying you), so I first thoroughly kill these. Clicking on "Don't notify me about updates" or such, is just a waste of time, it is a check box with no code behind it, it will always try to connect. 7. Many programs are still not compatible with Vista, and drivers too (even some HP printers and NIC cards). Besides that, it works like a charm :)

I got that same crash yesterday, but on XP and IE6. Perhaps an auto update to Flash we didn't know about?? This machine doesn't have MS AutoUpdate turned on so I know that wasn't it...
