I think those things are very important. I also think that professional people, like ourselves, should act in a professional manner. Showing up on or before the time you and your employer agreed on, is just one small piece of the puzzle. Plus it will make you boss(es) happy.:)

Slacker. I leave home at 6:00 a.m., arrive at work at 6:20. I don't go out the door until 4:00 or 4:30, though :sigh:.

I see that I'm going good as I did all the tasks that I was asking for in time. But I'm having a problem, I've never been in regular time :) never came at 8 o'clock, always 8,30 - 9 sometimes till 9:30. Are you used to be late ? :confused:

But my salary is getting cut when i cross the limit or 5 grace or 2 late marks (=1 half day)." Cut by who? Do your extra 1.5 hours a day get counted as "early marks"? Do you get extra salary for working longer, or just less salary for working less? It'd be unfair to dock people for arriving late but not reward them for arriving early/leaving late.

My office timings are 9:00AM to 6:00PM, but I get to work sometime between 9:30AM and 10:00AM. I am loving it!

Work the hours that suit you best. A good employer will judge you on output, not attendance. Management by counting heads and looking at a clock is not real management. However, make sure your boss is comfortable with working non-standard hours...
This is the best reply so far. Working hours are for the purpose of supporting the timely running of a company, if your position demands that you be responsible for that operation from a certain time, then so be it, but that also means your responsibilities end at a certain time. Anything beyond that should not be judged on the basis of a time sheet. Most IT professionals are in fact creative sector. By that I mean that they are producing something that cannot (or more accurately should not) be simply churned out assembly line style. Employees today are much too willing to subjugate themselves to the ranks of victorian factory workers. You are not a cog, and the company is not an engine. You are a person and what you produce through your sizeable talents directly translates to profit and respect for your company. The question I would ask isn't "what time is it best for me to get in and not be chastised or feel guilty for being too late" but "what is it really that makes me late?" A company should feel like family, and as such you should feel a genuine happy obligation to arrive at work when expected. But if you don't then the company managers should be asking themselves "why don't our employees want to be here?". JR

That seems like a really disrespectful attitude to the employees then! Personally, I'd leave any job that treated me with that attitude, and go somewhere where I'm appreciated, rather than treated like a schoolchild.

You late people all leave us punctual people waiting on you. Arrive when you said you would arrive, not 15 minutes late. If so get your lazy self out of bed earlier so you can get to work on time.

Seriously, I left my last job in part because we had a scrum meeting at 9 AM and I couldn't get downtown by 9 after dropping my daughter off at daycare. And the scrum meetings became a bit of a joke - I do like the idea, but it got to be 2 years of going over the same issues every morning and not making any progress. If I had a chance to run a scrum team I would do the meetings as a coffee break or something, and I might (I know this is heresy!) not do them every day. I think it's important to keep the whole team on the same page, but lots of great software has been written by people who don't even live in the same time zone, nevertheless who meet in person each day.

I can't image arriving at the office at 8am or even 9! However, working 10 to 6 (maybe a little later) works perfectly for me and has for many years. Clearly there are some IT shops that I could not work in and that's perfectly okay with me. I am constantly amazed at the lack of insight company managers have into the way people work. The rigid time clock punching 9 to 5 paradigm simply doesn't work for everyone. And those who don't comply aren't necessarily lazy. Many businesses could offer some sort of flex-time to their employees and still conduct their business. But, unfortunately, so few do...

Whatever. Rigid adherence to a set work frame is for insects. I get my work done. I remember a guy that got in on time every day, and didn't call in sick. Yet, for some reason his work was never done on time. Yet, with my funky schedule my work gets done on time. Go figure. Like I said. Rigid adherence to a 9-5 schedule is for insects.
