Just when you think you've seen it all, an Italian club cut Ahn from their roster for the simple reason that he scored the winning goal against the Italian nationals! How outrageous can you get?! What was he supposed to do? Not make the goal? I can understand if he had cheated, but he did nothing but represent his country and score a winning goal. I would be terribly embarrassed if I was an Italian football fan about now. Here's the story: Angry Italian club owner cuts Ahn Cheers, Tom Archer Author - Inside C#, Visual C++.NET Bible

Yep. I heard about the BBC's account. However, it was the club owner who stated "He was a phenomenon only when he played against Italy. I am a nationalist and I regard such behavior not only as an affront to Italian pride but also an offense to a country which two years ago opened its doors to him". He then added, "I have no intention of paying a salary to someone who has ruined Italian soccer." Ruined Italian soccer? Italian soccer is now ruined because one upstart country beat them? Hmmm. Doesn't say a whole lot about the state of their sport. Cheers, Tom Archer Author - Inside C#, Visual C++.NET Bible

I think that they let Ahn free because his contract is going to expire next month and he will ask for much more money. The owner of his club is famous for this kind of thinks. He's uses to fire trainers that didn't agree with him or players that ask for a raise. Now he has a chance to fire Ahn and to show himself on tvs and on the media as a fierce nationalist. He's good only in finding good players in foreign countries or italian minor leagues (he bring Nakata to italy), and his team is one of the most profitable of serie A. Ahn played less than half of the matches of his team (many times entering during the second half) and scored only 5 goals in 2 years, but I think he's a good player that can do very well in other italian or european teams. The defy against Korea lead to many stupid and even racist comments on italian media and I think that this is ashaming. I don't like to be called "macaroni" or asked about mafia when I'm in a foreign country and I'm sorry to see many italians doing the same against other people. -- Looking for a new screen-saver? The Koreans deserve that victory - they just played better than the so-called big names. Please can somebody tell the nationalist to use only Italian nationals for his club? Anyway, remind him that Ahn also has nationality, a Korean. Best regards, Paul. Paul Selormey, Bsc (Elect Eng), MSc (Mobile Communication) is currently Windows open source developer in Japan.

This is the biggest problem of european soccer: Noone is doing some own work with their own kids, everybody is 'buying' their players from elsewhere. => Look at the Brazilians, they play a really nice ball, thats a lot of love, not only the money.. That's just my 2 cents ! Olli

This BBC Sports article paints this in another light. It says that the club booted the guy not because he beat Italy, but because of the comments he made after the game about Italian football. Personally, I can see the guy high on the rush of sending a 3-time world champion babbling some not-so-flattering comments about the rivals. History is always written by the victors :) In any case, I doubt he'll have problems finding employment now :-D ___________ Klaus [vbbox.com]

That's true you were not helped by the referees, but IMHO the main error was made by Trapatoni: why did he change Del Pierro who was the best italian player on the field, instead of Totti, who played like a painter ? Totti was punished also because of his behaviour during the first round, when he got a yellow card for simulation (vs. Mexico ?). And you know how offsides are difficult to be judged.. So that's why I think the referee was not good, not that he was unfair. For example, he could have been much more severe on the several blows with the elbow the Italian players gave. Pah! </Paul being a racist bigot> From the sounds of it the whole playing for a club vs. playing for your country war is just getting hotter. Here in SA we are having big problems with players (both in Soccer and Rugby) simply not pitching for practices or games because the overseas clubs simply have more money on offer. Andres was shot in a fight with a drunk guy. It wasn't mob related. I know because I lived in Colombia at the time and followed the investigation.

I stand corrected then. This is the main problem I have with the media. When the story first broke out, it was said that he was killed by the mob becuase of lost gambling money. Of course, once the investigation was finished the media didn't care to correct themselves as it was old news  Cheers, Tom Archer Author - Inside C#, Visual C++.NET Bible
