It doesn't seem to like that I gave a "5" to "non-Microsoft content sites" for where I find the best help. It keeps repeating that page. I guess I have to be more conformant. Marc

Cool it! This isn't a survey being done here in the forums. Microsoft is conducting a survery though, here[^]. Take it out on them!

This is far from the first survey on the msdn documentation, they ignored all my suggestions the last time, why bother again? :)

because it was the first one I answered. They have been waiting for my opinion, silly. ;P

No, they want you to stay connected to the site long enough, so that they can track your IP down, and map the location via Microsoft Virtual Earth. When they said they wanted to 'fix' things, Marc, I'm not sure you understood exactly how they intended to make that happen ... Run Marc. Run. ;P

Thanks for that link. I hope it will be useful ? But, as a french I have a big problem with automatic translation from english to french on MSDN online. Often it's unreadable (pour ne pas dire tout simplement incompréhensible, inintelligible, illisible !). I have to type the number of the KB in its english version to get the original text in english which unfortunately makes me loose some time as I take about twice the time to read the same text in french. Can't they employ human translators ? OK, they already have a huge amount of texts to translate but if they never translate it correctly, I'm sorry to say that they don't fit my needs. What do you think about that "language barrier" (english or die) ?

Took the survey - felt good to vent - if anyone really reads it. You'll note that one (often) can access the documentation through the F1 (help) key. This is merely a ploy by MS to get IP rights on the Oxymoron: "Microsoft Help" But, by-and-large, when weighing the time spent vs. the value received, I find that the MSDN is somewhat worse than useless about half the time.

I read the first sentence which states: "The purpose of this survey is to gather input on how and when Visual Studio content is used, how satisfied customers are with it, and where areas of improvement exist." Since "where areas of improvement exist" sounds like it was written by someone who does not speak English I'm not going to waste time on this.

I used to hate it, but ever since i got a better understanding of OOP, it is a lifesaver. I just hate the slow load time of the treeview on the left. It always takes about 5 seconds to initialize for each page request. Brian Burdan

Cool it! This isn't a survey being done here in the forums. Microsoft is conducting a survery though, here[^]. Take it out on them!

Did the survey. Here's my response on the last item: In general, it's very often incomplete. I've been using VC++/MFC since version 1.5, and the documentation has been terrible; tasks that should take minutes have taken DAYS OR WEEKS, in a large part because of the incomplete and sometimes incoherent documentation. It's so bad people make jokes about it. Since the web, it's gotten better because developers no longer have to rely solely on MS documentation. It doesn't seem to be getting better; in fact the opposite is true. With Visual Studio 6, help comes up almost instantly. With the current version, there's a wait while content is accessed over the Internet. The results appear to be returned in random order. Why can't the most relevant items appear first, like Google does? Now we find out the samples will be separated from the reference material in the next version. Also the documentation wastes developer time by not telling what DOESN'T work. A few examples: When doing ODBC work for the first time, the documentation led me to believe primary keys/foreign keys were supported, and I spent a few days writing a solution based on that impression. They weren't, and all that time was wasted. This year, the documentation led me to believe .NET supported the CMYK color space. (And the documentation for that area was particularly fragmented and incoherent. I had to print out dozens of topics and spend hours dissecting sentences to even START to get an understanding of how to use it). Bottom line: CMYK was NOT supported, and Microsoft wasted my time.

I would suggest the Office Assistant Character set be introduced again. That way, the preferred Animated Character can be chosen by the user itself to manage through the MSDN ocean with ease. Abolishing them ^ from the face of Office 2007 is a sign of diehard cruelty.

I'd welcome the office assistant characters - if there was a way I could watch them die a gruesome animated death when I switch them off (Oh - and give me choices about how to kill them, too). Sorry, but when I'm at work (or at play on my PC) I don't need cutesy animations pulling my attention away from the task at hand. In fact, I'm just not into cutesy, whenever or wherever. Sorry to those of you who love it, but I don't. X|

Thanks for that! Survey ended with: "Examples, examples, examples, examples! Explanation, explanation, explanation, explanation!" The complete references of C# .Net2.0 and Interops for Office 2003 are lacking anything but basic APIs.
