A ballpein hammer. Alternately in the middle of the night you could deposit sacks of cement in their trash cans every week to hammer them with the penalty until they decide it's a bad idea and rescind it.

My local council are planning on installing RFID chips in refuse bins in order that they can weigh and charge (extra - I pay my local taxes, dammit!) to remove my rubbish. Now I'm not a tolerant soul when it comes to Government interference in things, so do any of you good people know of a decent RFID killer?

It's called an incentive to reduce the amount of trash people generate; You just have to reduce the amount of "real" trash you are generating by doing more recycling and maybe dump organic material in a compost bin. Normally, when a city wants to do something like that, they need to offer a free recycling and composting program to balance the reduction in trash. People who care will make the effort to do that and not pay extra; people who do not, they will pay the extra.

Swap your bin with someone from the city council. Fill bin with cement.

Odds are that they also aren't expecting my vigilante RFID action - I shall work at night, protecting the bins of the entire community. I may even from a league... of like minded community defenders :)

Hey maybe you'll develop some sort of mutant XMen like power for this? Have you considered your costume, your alter-ego name? What about... RFIDman! I'd recommend an all black outfit, cape optional. Maybe some ancillary super powers that you could develop would be to emit a static, white noise hiss at will.

Excellent. Once again the wheel has turned and Dame Fortune has hugged Martin Hughes to her sweet, perfumed bosom.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for recycling/saving the planet/cutting waste and certainly do my part - it's just that this is nothing more than a stealth tax on top of the tax I already pay to have my waste removed. They ain't talking about any reduction in the "flat rate" tax at all.

I understand the point, but aren't you already paying for this service in the US? Or is it free, in that case I understand, but if you already pay for it, I'm not so ok. If they "missvaluated" their taxes, their problem, and it's their job to change them, but imo this is abusing of your privacy.

It is happening all across the UK by the looks of it. It was political suicide until a few weeks ago, but the government has put in place some unrealistic targets on recycling and the councils don't have the facilities so they need to generate the money to pay the fines they wouldn't have had to pay if they'd just put the systems in place years ago when they first heard about it rather than wait until now. Why is is no longer political suicide? Because councils of all political colours are going down this route so it doesn't matter who you vote for, they are all doing pretty much the same thing.

I just don't buy a lot of stuff. Yes, I live by myself with my dog but I have found that the majority of trash comes from consumer purchases. If I don't buy anything then I have no trash!

Stick a neodymium magnet near where the tag is implanted. You can buy them on ebay. It should screw up anything relying on the electromagnetic spectrum within close distance  Alternatively tie a bunch of helium filled balloons to the bin :-D

This junk always amazed me. How they feel that they can limit the amount of garbage you throw out. They try to do it here too. The garbage men whine if the cans are too heavy. Screw them. I can get them to the curb, they can lift them into the truck. I have been trying to trow out 3 wash baskets and one of those flip top plastic bins now for three weeks and every week they just leave them, apparently either because I am not putting them into the garbage bin or because they think I just want to sit them out by the curb for all to see or something. Idiots.. You know what? I don't want to spend my day lifting other peoples garbage either. That's why I did not become a garbage man!

I did have the model at one point, but I can't recall what happened to it - but what the fiend threw out was my original 1979 First Issue Kenner Millennium Falcon (boxed!!!) Booooooo! I must get around to throwing some of her stuff out. I'll be right back :)

NExt time try leaving them a hint. Tape a piece of paper that says 'trash' or 'please take' to the containers. I've never had a problem getting rid of them when I did that. Remember people don't go into garbage collection because of high intelligence.

Another example of politicians failing to understand the principle of "path of least resistance". If you make people pay to dispose of their trash legally, they will avoid paying by disposing of it illegally. So now, instead of most garbage being disposed of properly/safely, people will start dumping in back alleys, wooded area's, wherever they can hide it.

...cmk The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying. - John Carmack
