Yeah. I know what you are talking about. However, in my case, the price was justified. They had to remove the freaking radiator fan AND the battery to get to the light. Took half an hour. All the other lights I change myself (takes about 2 minutes to get them replaced), but the front left light assembly is totally inaccessible.

I know the feeling about a year ago I went to get my front lights changed thinking I'll be in and out of the shop in max of 10 min 2 hour's later I was still there, the had to take a huge part of the engine out just to get to the light :sigh:
If my help was helpfull let me know, if not let me know why. The only way we learn is by making mistakes.

Just wanted to rant about how annoying cars are. I just picked mine up from the mechanic, and there is over $600 just in labour... so parts on top of that... i was too scared to ask Whats your horror stories with cars?

Nope, I haven't had any car issues in the last 10 years. I purchased 1995 Chevy Lumina with 100K miles on it for $6,000 back in 97. I drove it for three years (without a single problem) until it was in a accident. Took out a loan and purchased a new 2000 Nissan Sentra. I drove that car for about 5 years without a problem. About a year after paying off the loan. I traded in the Sentra and purchased a new 2006 Scion (Toyota) Xb almost exactly two years ago. It hasn't had a single problem. I guess I've been really lucky. My very first car (a used Plymouth Duster) had a thermostat break which caused it to over heat. About $200 to fix. That is the only car problem I have ever had. Do you change your oil at least every 5,000 miles?

Or an old car of a type known to be reliable: I am thinking of buying a Mercedes-Benz W210 station wagon[^]. Thats probably more normal here than in America, and we have a saner choice of engines. Its basically an old-mans car: The type of man who washes and polishes it weekly. The car would be 6 to 8 years old, but those that did not rust by now won't start any more. Thats what they say. It costs above 12000 EURO here, and I would get a new car (assembled by enslaved Romanian children for French company Renault) for under 10000 EURO. But there is no long-term experience about the quality of that.

In the last three years I've totalled two: my Mazda Miata :(( and my truck :zzz:. Both times the accidents were my fault. My insurance company calls me "sugar daddy" :doh:.

Seriously though, after the second accident (New Year's Eve this year), I've become a different driver. I turned left in front of an oncoming car at an intersection. I should have waited until the intersection was clear, since visibility is poor at this particular spot. I realized my aggressive driving habits were the cause of my second accident. Since then I've been a lot more cautious, without being timid about it. I leave more room ahead of me, and my threshold for 'enough room' to maneuver is much higher. Interestingly, I enjoy driving more now; it's a lot less stressful :doh:.

I have 10 km per single trip to work, a distance I find quite comfortable. In addition, its quite a scenic tour, along a river troug a natural reserve into the outskirts of the city where the company is located. As to agressive driving: I stoped it when my first child was born. With a baby in the car, I became somewhat over protective. But now, my younger one is 3 crying from the background: "and half!", the kids start to urge me to drive faster. :-O

I've been pretty lucky with my cars. I own a 2004 Saturn and the only major problem was I had to have the catalytic converter replaced and that was under federal warranty so it didn't cost anything. When I first met my husband he wrecked a car because he didn't understand the concept of the oil change.

Sounds nice. My ride to work is comparable. The distance ranges between 10 and 12 miles (16-19 km) depending upon the route. I can choose anything from flat (bike paths) to moderately hilly (back roads) to very hilly (different back roads). Winter riding would be difficult for me, and not just because of the cold. Local road crews prioritize on primary routes, so the back roads don't tend to be clear of snow, which makes riding difficult. The bike path isn't plowed at all, so that's out. I could ride more than I do, but it usually doesn't happen unless we get one of those exceptionally warm days and the road/path is clear.

I've almost paid it off, and the car is still valued at over $15k so I may be able to trade it in on a new WRX :-D (with a loan of course)

Here in northern Germany, the gulf-stream makes the climate quite "Atlantic" - mild and humid. The last time we had more snow than just a finger high was ... - well, my elderly neighbor might recall that winter. I can't. :)

Bought a new car in Sept 2006, so i've been luckly. But I know what you mean, sometimes, the labour is insane just for a $2 part! I suggest you search on car forums to see if what you need to fix is simple enough that you can do it yourself. With a little time you might save yourself some cash and have a feeling of pride that you did it yourself..... Until it breaksdown when you drive it!
