In another sign that Google is slavishly aping Microsoft, there's apparently a security flaw in the Google toolbar. Clickety[^]

The Google toolbar is the only toolbar that's any use. It's the functionality behind it that's the key. But each to his own.

Same here. It seems like every damn freeware app out there wants to install the thing. I don't need a toolbar that will wash my car, take my dog for a walk (I don't have a dog), and make smoked half-caff lattes.

It's interesting how this seems to be the case for a lot of people. If you installed all the toolbars you were offered then pretty soon you wouldn't actually be able to see the webpage because of all the bars.

Really? I think it's just detracting my focus from the center of the browser. Maybe this is why I actually like the new Office GUI, because it doesn't remove my focus so much from what I'm actually looking it. As you might understand, I prefer http://www.google.com, right in the middle of my browser. :)

So one can expect now another domain called http://googleupdate.google.com (like http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/[^]) filling our hard disk with all those sh*tty crap making our system run slower than a snail. If a hackers site is malware-distributing website, then these sites can also be clarified as a 'White-Collar Malware Websites' creating a diplomatic denial of service on desktops filling it with rubbish.

I agree. Even the bigger issue is that even Microsoft asks you whether you want to install something or not, but not the Google toolbar - it updates itself not asking you anything. I don't want something like that in my computer. Another issues is the general gray area that Google is in, I think we are yet to experience the problems when the monster grows up. I don't see how. May as well say that any menu at all is distracting your focus. In any case you can always toggle to full screen. IMO, the Google toolbar provides a lot of useful functionality. People seem fixated on the fact that it's a toolbar, rather than looking at the functionality it provides. Two for starters are: 1. Auto-suggest in the search box - a great timesaver. 2. Search results highlighting and navigation to search terms.

I can write code fine without IntelliSense. It just takes me longer. The toolbar has a number of features that I find helpful. I mention two in the post above, but there are others.

I wonder how long deliberately accumulating that much cruft took.

Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull
