Multiple desktops?
-
When I'm really busy at work I usually have 8 or 10 windows out of necessity. Then a higher priority issue lands on my lap, requiring me to perform a context switch. I have to open four or six other windows, at which point I feel uncomfortable at having so many windows open and my machine gets bogged down. What I'd really like to do be able to do is perform some uber Alt+Tab which opens up another desktop, where a new set of windows can be opened and the taskbar does not show windows open in other desktops. That way i could only have open the windows that I need to get a certain task done, and not be bothered with 30 or so nuggets in the taskbar. Is there a product that allows you to do this on Windows? If so, what's it called?! :)

Sounds like you just need more monitors. 3 should really be the minimum. After that, the more the merrier.

I wish! I'm working off a laptop with a (single) 17 inch display. :^)

Well if you're on the go with your laptop your kinda stuck with trying the virtual desktop. But if you're working at your desk at home/office you could get a matrox TripleHead2Go. When I'm at home that's what my laptop gets hooked up to: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=170332[^]

That is one of the things I'm really missing after working with various Linux flavors. In college I typically had one desktop for IDE, second for documentation, third for compiling/uploading to college server and fourth one for recreation. It's also one of the many small things that I wish MS implemented in Vista instead of useless bling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_desktop[^] I tried microsoft virtual power toy and it didn't work very well for me. Simply alt-tabbing between different applications kept breaking it so I had to uninstall it. I haven't tried shell replacements because I'm too paranoid (and rightfully so) about stability. So unless you are willing to explore one of those shell replacements I'm afraid you're out of luck.

Why don't you minimize the windows you don't need to system tray wit this tool: Window Tray Minimizer[^] ? BTW, I'm working on a small utility that will help to clean up space in taskbar. I hope to post it here soon.

Thanks for pointing me to that a few weeks back, Lauren. I've been using it and it's a great tool indeed.

something i've wondered about that, does it give you 1 3840x1024 screen or 3 independent 1280x1024's? I prefer to run all apps maximized, so it matters to me.
Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

I think the software that comes with it will let you maximize to each display if you like. I haven't actually tried it this way myself. My display thinks it's 1 large 3840x1024. So for me if i maximize it spans all 3. I'll see if i can set it up to maximize to each display tonight and let you know how it goes.

I use this(free and open source): VirtuaWin I have found to have the fewest interaction problems with the software I use every day. It's fast and reliable. On one other product (the Windows Power Toys Virtual Window app, I think), I had problems with our customer service db (Onyx), but no problems with VirtuaWin. Hope this helps.

I use nView Desktop Manager (from NVIDIA) which comes with the graphics driver. Most new graphic cards should have this as an option. jhaga

Microsoft has made its own virtual desktop app free to download and use, but I've been using VirtuaWin for a while. It's simple, clean, and never seems to screw up: http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/[^]

Thanks Mark. Someone else suggested VirtuaWin, and I am now using/loving it.
