Ahem: what, exactly, do you need a gun for? I have lived in 'your' country and I maintain very close ties and am an ardent admirer and dedicated Yankophile. However, your obsession with weaponry has always perplexed me. It's not whether or not the constitution allows it or confers ownership as a right it is why you need them at all? I never felt the need to arm myself when there nor do I now nor does my family that are still there. So why do you? What is so important about carrying a weapon for which there is only one use?
Why don't you do some research on the subject? Educate yourself.

I don't have an "obsession" with weaponry. I have a few guns in case I need them. It's kinda like making backups of your data. You only perform backups in case something happens to your data. I have guns in case I need to defend myself, my home, or the Constitution.

If you shoot it responsibly, sure, why not? I know none of the local shooting ranges will allow you to use it. You'll probably have to drive at least 100 miles from the city before you can find a place.

I wouldn't say my hands are "distorted". I have some rifles and a few hand guns. Two of the four rifles I own are .22's (one bolt-action, and the other a lever-action) used for target practice because the Winchester .30-30 (a lever-action) is too expensive to shoot on a week-to-week basis. The fourth rifle is also a .22 (another bolt-action) that I let guests shoot when I go to the range. Notice that none of the rifles are semi-auto or considered "assault rifles". The pistols are both 9mm - one belongs to my wife, and one belongs to me. My wife has a CCL because she is often going (unescorted) to parts unknown to meet people unknown in the interest of volunteering for our dog rescue group. There's no telling what might happen while she's out and about, and was eager to get a CCL for self defense. I got my CCL to keep her company in the CCL class, and while I don't often carry, there are times when I have a gun in my car. Now, I'm a licensed experienced gun owner, and I have what I would call a less-then-exhaustive collection of firearms. How is that in any fucking way considered to be "distorted"?

You've done a study of all dictatorships (i.e., the vast majority of governments throughout human history) before making this assertion? I can't say that I've made any such survey myself, but I have read in several places that gun ownership is widespread in Iraq and that this has was true under Saddam. For example, this is from before the invasion:

Why do you, Jon Simmons, need a gun? What do you do with it? What is it's purpose? Would you actually kill someone in cold blood? (Actually I probably would given the right circumstances .. whatever they might be). And it is hard to sensibly equate keeping an object designed to kill with a backup of your data! I guess this is your answer:

Actually the monarch can't just walk into your house. The only person who can enter your house unnanounced and without a court order or a warrant is the VAT man (customs and excise). On a different note even when I lived in the US I never had a gun and never knew anyone (personally) who did. Never suffered any crime and, again, didn't know anyone (personally) who had either, at least, in a direct or violent way. Used to go out and never lock the front door or the car. Don't know much about the Swiss, do you? They certainly aren't "armed to the teeth". Just in 2004 they cut their military personnel in half. I know, I've lived here for 5 years. Their army consists of regular guys (non-professionals, basically a militia) who aren't particularly interested in fighting and most find some way to get excused from military service. They are actually conscripted beyond 30, but the "conscription" consists of weekends spent camping in the woods and shooting at still targets. Their military infrastructure is also dated and falling apart. They just shut down their nuclear bunker in the Gotthard tunnel because it is structurally unstable and got severely reprimanded for an incursion into Liechtenstein: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/mar/02/markoliver The only plus is that the local government reserves a spot in the town nuclear shelter for you even if you're a foreigner. Contrary to popular belief, it's also not very expensive. They also have a nasty habit of recording everything you do and intercept and keep all electronic communications and emails entering or exiting the country for a period of 1-3 years.
Just goes to show you, I'm older than I think I am. The Swiss used to be a porkupine nation. The next thing you're going to tell me is that the Pope has fired the Swiss Guards and hired Blackwater.

Well most normal people don't buy cough medicine that only contains DXM. Its worthless for coughs anyways. Most people who buy it get high on it. According to early reports, it appears as if the DC handgun ban will be struck down as being unconstitutional. If true, this will be a substantial victory for all patriots. For the uninitiated, the 2nd amendment does not *grant* the right to keep/bear arms, it says that the right shall not be infringed, meaning the right already existed as a natural right and thus cannot be taken away. Also, the 2nd amendment does not restrict the types of arms you may keep/bear.

As someone who lives in a country where there are few guns (contrary to what the Daily Mail might have you believe) and where the vast majority of policemen are unarmed and where I have never even considered owning a gun I do not understand the fuss. What, exactly, do you need a gun for?
