For a damned f*ckin'g bike? You really think, a pile of metal, that is not even worth getting a bleeding nose to defend it, is worth a human's life? Several of my bikes have been stolen at various train stations during the last years, and yes, I have been quite angry about that at that time. But for gods sake, a bike is only a bike.

Wait, you are the guy telling us a bit further down that thread, that you are stealing cough syrup? Now don't tell me, it's a shop you are stealing from, and not a person. Where's the difference? Stealing is stealing, you are not respecting property, according to your comment you have to pay the ultimate price.

Is that still true? I heard that the bobbies were insisting on being armed now - maybe that's true just in London?

Remember we have Captain See Sharp running around on the streets stealing to get enough money to buy another bottle of cough syrup. :) Maybe more to the point we have street gangs who do have guns, assault weapons in many cases, and who out number, out weapon, and outspend the police departments. Maybe even more to the point there's never been a dictatorship yet that has not disarmed its citizens as part of its power grab.

You've done a study of all dictatorships (i.e., the vast majority of governments throughout human history) before making this assertion? I can't say that I've made any such survey myself, but I have read in several places that gun ownership is widespread in Iraq and that this has was true under Saddam. For example, this is from before the invasion:

One gauge of that fear is the trade at gun shops. Most Iraqi households own at least one gun, so there has been no particular run on armaments. But some gun shop owners report as much as a 50 percent jump in ammunition sales. ''I came in to buy a hunting gun, but I'm also thinking about how to protect my house and the neighborhood streets,'' said Yasser Abu Bilal, looking at a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun at the Trigger gun shop in the upscale Mansour neighborhood.

One should probably be not be so shortsighted to not reevaluate ones rights as times change. I hope they bring back the right to accuse and burn witches with no evidence. I've heard that was good for a laugh.

That wasn't a right - it was religious persecution, and usually based on a lack of scientific knowledge.

Read the Constitution - the reasons are all in there, and it's been available for public consumption for over 200 years.

You (and CatastrophicQuince) are missing the point: I'm not questioning the constitution or what it says; I'm asking you, personally, why you need a weapon not why the constitution says you should have one. Why do you, Jon Simmons, need a gun? What do you do with it? What is it's purpose? Would you actually kill someone in cold blood? (Actually I probably would given the right circumstances .. whatever they might be). And it is hard to sensibly equate keeping an object designed to kill with a backup of your data! I guess this is your answer:

Someday I'm going to learn not to make flat out statements unless I have done a lot of research. I admit I was going on some reading of awhile back, but I did just find this in the Washington Post: "They are always saying that the Arabs and Muslims are behind the terrorism and the killing," said Hussein Kadhum, 26, a traffic policeman in the heavily Shiite city of Najaf, south of Baghdad. "But America has terrorism and they are exporting it to us. We did not have this violence in the Saddam era because the law was so tough on guns." Other quotes and factoids: "Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms." ~ Aristotle, Politics Ch 10 para 4. "If the opposition (citizen) disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves." ~ Josef Stalin "1935 will go down in History! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead to the future!" ~ Adolf Hitler In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. One man with a gun can control 100 without one. Make mass searches and hold executions for found arms."--V.I. Lenin A million (some estimates are as high as two million) Cambodians were exterminated by dictator Pol Pot. The country enacted strict gun laws in 1956. More than 300,000 Ugandans were slaughtered by dictator Idi Amin Dada- after the country enacted tough gun control laws in 1955 and 1970. However, you are absolutely right. I should have said "many" dictators, not "all" - mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. :-O

Actually the monarch can't just walk into your house. The only person who can enter your house unnanounced and without a court order or a warrant is the VAT man (customs and excise). On a different note even when I lived in the US I never had a gun and never knew anyone (personally) who did. Never suffered any crime and, again, didn't know anyone (personally) who had either, at least, in a direct or violent way. Used to go out and never lock the front door or the car. So, why do you need a gun?

A gun is much like a parachute. You will probably never need one but if you do there is nothing - absolutely nothing - that will take its place. Some pundit once said that God made all men equal and Smith and Wesson keeps them that way. Richard

What the hell would anyone in Liechtenstein know about defending himself?

Don't know much about the Swiss, do you? They certainly aren't "armed to the teeth". Just in 2004 they cut their military personnel in half. I know, I've lived here for 5 years. Their army consists of regular guys (non-professionals, basically a militia) who aren't particularly interested in fighting and most find some way to get excused from military service. They are actually conscripted beyond 30, but the "conscription" consists of weekends spent camping in the woods and shooting at still targets. Their military infrastructure is also dated and falling apart. They just shut down their nuclear bunker in the Gotthard tunnel because it is structurally unstable and got severely reprimanded for an incursion into Liechtenstein: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/mar/02/markoliver The only plus is that the local government reserves a spot in the town nuclear shelter for you even if you're a foreigner. Contrary to popular belief, it's also not very expensive. They also have a nasty habit of recording everything you do and intercept and keep all electronic communications and emails entering or exiting the country for a period of 1-3 years.

According to early reports, it appears as if the DC handgun ban will be struck down as being unconstitutional. If true, this will be a substantial victory for all patriots. For the uninitiated, the 2nd amendment does not *grant* the right to keep/bear arms, it says that the right shall not be infringed, meaning the right already existed as a natural right and thus cannot be taken away. Also, the 2nd amendment does not restrict the types of arms you may keep/bear.

I just got 780mg of DXM for tonight ;P Don't know if I'm going to take it all or not. I usually do 300mg once or twice a week.

As someone who lives in a country where there are few guns (contrary to what the Daily Mail might have you believe) and where the vast majority of policemen are unarmed and where I have never even considered owning a gun I do not understand the fuss. What, exactly, do you need a gun for?

Primarily to protect us from tyranical gov't, or from invaders such as the Britsh were 200 years ago.

Wow, 300mg is about 10x the therapeutic (anti-cough) dose, isn't it? Anyway, happy horror trip! --Edit: Completely reversed the meaning of my text. I got the doses wrong.--

Either there was some point in history where the 'right' came into existence, or the US has existed through all time, the 'right' included along with it. Now, assuming that it is the former as opposed to the latter (although I could be swayed on the issue) then that 'right' must have come OUT OF somewhere. I don't think it's a law of nature that everyone can own a gun (assumed simply for the sake of the argument), so I'm assuming that someone came up with the notion that everyone can have a gun. That makes it an idea.

Richard of York gave battle in vain.

It certainly *is* a law of nature that one can defend oneself, even if it means killing the attacker. A gun is a necessary implement of defense in a modern society. Therefore, owning a gun for self-defense *is* indeed a natural right.

As long as I am listening to music, and posting in the soapbox, the trip cant go wrong. I have done close to 1gram in one night, and I didn't loose my head.

Just goes to show you, I'm older than I think I am. The Swiss used to be a porkupine nation. The next thing you're going to tell me is that the Pope has fired the Swiss Guards and hired Blackwater.

Yeah, they still protect the Pope. Actually, I'm in France right now and I can't wait to get back to Switzerland - I miss it. I miss traveling on their punctual trains with hoards of drunken Swiss militiamen with assault weapons and machine guns (they move their men by train and yes, the trains are RIGHT ON time and SPOTLESS). Other trivia: Legal drinking age is 16 and you can drink freely in public. Also, for a population with so many guns there is little to no gun crime - mostly stabbings. There are alot of stupid rules too, like you can't shower after 10pm in some buildings so that the people below you can't hear the water running, you can't hang your underwear to dry in public view, etc....

Do you think the First Amendment should be changed? Seeing as (and i'm sorry for bringing it in) freedom of religion is a right, a fair few of your posts don't always seem to share that view. Aren't you against everyone elses right to believe what they want? "One does not justify one's rights; one asserts them, one exercises them." - terrorist in training?
