Reminds me of the Rockford files (you know that 70's detective show) where Rockford had a trailer on a California beach, that might be less than 3k/month and with in 50 miles of work... but that was 70's. :) Seriously though, Conway Arkansas has 2 big companies, Axciom and Verizon. Very afordable house prices. I would check them out. There is also the Veterans Administration which is 20 miles outside Conway in Little Rock. Good Luck.

DONE !!!! now the question is to where next. Looking for a place to move to where young families are around, jobs are plentiful , houses with 3-4 bedrooms are not 50 miles away from work and finally less than 3k a month :) what are you guys making in other parts of the US as application architects, senior software engineers and the like? Are the .NET jobs plentiful? Any advice ( mocking and not are welcome ) Could use a good laugh
St Louis. We may be ranked in the top 5 most dangerous cities (always in competition with Detroit it seems) but I believe the statiticians evaluate 3 blocks of north city and ignore the rest. On the plus side are a below average cost of living with above average earnings. Contract work you should be able to pick up $30-60 p/h, fulltime 60's - 90's depending on experience and ability. You'll easily find a new 3-4 bedroom house in reasonable driving range in the low 200's. Vineyards along the Missouri river, a free zoo, lots of great restaurants, botantical gardens, great drives along the Mississippi, not much of a rush hour (the locals do still bitch about it) and generally relaxed atmosphere. No hurricanes, no serious earthquakes in over 100 years and tornados don't tend to form over the metro area due to radiative heating. On the downside it's stinking hot July and August and freezing cold December-March. If you suffer from allergies you'll soon equate the place to one of Dante's circles of hell and if you like urban environments you'll soon be dissapointed. It's very suburban and the downtown area pretty much shuts down at 5pm aside from a few locations.

The jobs are good in Dallas-Fort Worth and houses are very affordable. And, there some pretty good public schools in the suburbs. But, it is a very dull place unless you enjoy dining out a lot and some of the most insanely stupid drivers in the world.

Have you seen any of the youtube videos showing Indian traffic (or anywhere else where rising affluence is sending car ownership soaring in a population that was recently almost entirely limited to musclebound transportation)?

Sure. But people here drive angry and aggressively. I've driven in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Tel Aviv, Paris, LA &, NYC. The people on the freeways scare me here more than anywhere I've been. It's common to see cars flying across 4 lanes of traffic to exit at the last possible moment at 60+ mph. And, I'd bet $10 anytime I am out driving that the moment I use my signal to change lanes the person behind me in that lane will do all they can to keep me from changing lanes while pretending they don't see my signal. Plus, I have never see so many single care collisions in my life; the drivers are so aggressive here that many just lose control of their vehicles and hit trees and railings.

No, have relatives there, visit fairly often. Seems like a nice place. Been scoping it out for possible next move... but that is several years off, it's in my top 10 places to live (that I can afford).

How about DC outskirts ?? Lots of young people, plenty of jobs (most of them related to government and/or defense). Traffic is kind of bad, and housing is expensive, but you can't have it all now can you ? Actually if you move a bit further out, you can find loads of pretty affordable housing, but then your commute will be bad. Another place you can try: Phoenix. I heard it is growing very fast, you can get a nice house for about $200K and there are a lot of jobs. Just keep in mind it is 120F in the summer...

I just read on the internet about the "Best Place to Live in the US" and it's Charlotte, NC as number 1. Right now, I think that NC has the most potential of anyplace else in the US. See the story on Yahoo!. I also live in the DFW area, been here for 25 years, and never have had a problem finding a job. Between Dallas, Ft Worth, and Arlington, as well as the surrounding suburbs, I think this is a great place to live. However, I would not recommend living in Dallas County. There are way too many idiot politicians there, the school district is an absolute mess of corruption, and the taxes are more than what you get in return. There are several outstanding school districts in the suburbs --- stay out of the cities of Ft Worth and Dallas!

True but with the exception of Austin, it's down right boring in Texas. At least thats my opinion living in DFW where the favorite activities are eating too much and shopping.

I live in South Dakota in the south-eastern part where developers are always needed. We have also bucked the mortgage crisis. The company I work for basically has an open-ended job posting; if you're good they will hire you. If you go to my blog (see sig) and email me I can give more details. Keep in mind that SD has snow more months of the year than not. But very family oriented (my company allows you to take sick time regardless if it's you, your spouse or kid). You can live in town or within 30 miles for a few thousand less. I bought a 2000 sq foot house that overlooks a lake for less than $200,000.

Phoenix?
Not many decent jobs in Phoenix at the moment unless you are junior to low mid level Java or C# guy and even then I can name all 6 open positions to you from memory. If you have secret clearance there are some pretty cool defense contractors here and even then they are hard to get into.

From watching Dice the contract hourly rates have been plummeting there. Last summer I would see advertisements in DFW hovering around $60/hr now they are in the $40/hr range. Actually, I see an average advertised drop of about $20/hr across the nation for short-term contract labor in .NET programming yet Flights and Hotels have gone up.

Salt Lake City Not a super number of jobs, but there are jobs. Affordable housing and decent salaries. Lots of young families, decent schools. Biggest problem is Winter. I hate Winter.

Exactly, and very, very few *real* senior positions. I tire of seeing Senior positions listed that only require 1-3 years of experience and some kind of degree from some school nobody has ever heard about. Yeah, that's senior, in dog years maybe... Anyway, most of the stuff out here is limited at the moment, which is why I work in San Jose now and still live in the Phoenix area.

I live about 55 miles from Charlotte. There are a number of job openings - mostly C#. However, you do have to deal with brutal temps in the summer in the south, and in Charlotte, you'll be living in a city with a high crime rate and traffic jams only rivaled by cities five times it size. You might want to take a look at Colombia, SC - lots of openings, mostly Web, many .NET. It's a more laid back city with less crime and traffic - or the golden triangle around Raleigh-Durham NC. A nicer area all around, though more expensive than the other two. Of course these are all my opinion and worth every cent you paid for 'em.

Having lived in DC area for a few years; DC area has problems with schools; * Montgomery County-tries to push the limits of wierdness, always in national news for such things as showing elementary, Jr High students how to put condems on cucumbers, and alternate lifestyle education initiatives. * Prince Georges County- Plain poor. * DC-in race with Missisipi for last place in poorest school system * Fairfax county- High illegal alien population, high resources geared to spanish speaking immigrant populations * Prince William (same as fairfax) Basically if you locate in DC area you have put your kid in private school, spend alot of time with your child doing homework, or deprogram them from wierd-lifestyle initiatives. Of course I am sure there are isolated schools in DC area that are good, for different grades.
