Any CPians driving fuel efficient cars ? What are they and how do they rate performance versus efficiency trade off ?

I have 3 cars :- A Fiesta diesel (hers) - no idea how often she fills it up, probably once a month. An Astra diesel (mine for business), I do ~500 miles a week with a weekly fill up. An Aston DB9 (mine for fun :) ). Ironically the DB9 is the most fuel efficient - it sits in the garage 99% of the time appreciating. There's a lesson in that. Expensive cars are very good for the environment: you'll always be too petrified that some berk in banger is going to rear end you to use them on a regular basis :)

Used 99 Nissan Maxima. Which, at that period of time, had good gas mileage, and it's what I could afford. Which is listed at like 26hwy, but it really gets more like 22 ... sitting in stop/go traffic is murderous on fuel economy; doesn't matter if you're sitting on a Highway or not ... Can you really get 28 mpg in that? I saw one for sale recently (5.7 L) but I decided I'd stick with my 3.9L mustang because it gets about 32 mpg on nothing but highway. That might change my mind. :cool:
Depends on the weather. On occasion the fuel meter has said 29mpg on cruise and mostly it is at 26 on cruise. Of course, my city driving is probably around 5 mpg because I treat every stoplight as an opportunity to practice.

Buick Lacrosse. Smallest/cheapest vehicle class with enough legroom for me. I'd drive a midsize/compact (supplemented with a used 4x4 for in the snow) if I could, but the former consistently have 1-2" less back travel in the seat and the latter are even worse. Locally I get ~20mpg: Half city driving, half highway driving but up/down a mountain (the 10mpg uphill murders overall fuel economy). Depending on relative flatness I get between 25 and 27.8 on the interstate driving in the left lane.

I am 6'2. There are some compact cars that I cannot physically fit in or drive so a major factor in my car purchase decision is, Do my knees hit the dash and does my head it the roof.

I drive a '04 Corolla and the wife has a '05 Prius. In the third stall of the garage parked for camping weekends and hauling loads is a '95 4Runner. The Corolla gets about 32mpg and the Prius gets about 50mpg.

Like the Corolla, it's been trouble free the entire time we have owned it. The Corolla is a bit roomier than the Prius.

I hear you. I get terrible knee pain if there is not enough legroom (and I'm only 25, not like I have arthritis). In fact, on my Nissan Altima I have my seat all the way back and it's just right. I don't expect to buy a new car any time soon, but when I do legroom will be my first consideration above anything else.

His desk has risers custom-built for it in our machine shop. The risers bring his desktop up to 36" off the floor so his knees fit underneath. Josh drives a Honda Pilot.

You must be six feet tall or less. I've driven my mother's Corolla a couple of times, and I was pretty cramped (I'm 6'1"), even with the seat as far back as it would go.

Ford Mondeo diesel (ok, the Giha X) 45mpg on short runs, 55mpg on long runs. A good safety rating (4-4.5) and heated seats, great for winter mornings :cool: Elaine (austere fluffy tigress)

Oh yeah, I'm a short guy about 5'7". I have a feeling that my son will outgrow the Corolla faster than my wife and I. He's not quite 2.5 years yet and he is well over 3' (39"), he must have gotten it from his grandfathers.

Renault Megane - it's OK, but I primarily bought it for it's safety - it's a Euro NCAP 5 (the highest safety rating) and I put the safety of my kids above my old sports car.
Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.
I looked seriously at the Renaults for precisely that reason ... excellent safety record.

Is it expensive to get the Prius serviced. I always wondered that about the hybrid cars, are they hell to maintain ?

You appear to the most efficient motorist among your country-men! When I asked the question I was expecting people to talk in excess of 60mpg ... Boy was I disappointed !

I change the oil myself if that's what you mean? As far as the big warranty inspections they've been a bit more than the corolla but not by much (~$50)

'05 1.3l Ford Fiesta. I get 600k to the tank (50l) in urban driving (no traffic jams though.) Girlfriend drives a '99 1.6l Ford Focus and gets 650k to the tank (60l) in urban driving. Friend had a diesel Skoda Octavia and was getting ~750k in mixed urban/inter-city driving. Now he has a 1.9l diesel Alfa-Romeo 159 and it gets... well, he just laughs and makes zooming noises.

Old Mercury Sable, roughly 28-30 MPG. Currently thinking about buying a motor scooter for local stuff, but since i can't actually get anywhere without hitting a highway it'd have to be one of the larger beasts (Honda Helix, etc.). 60 MPG would be fantastic...
