This stinks!!! IT just had a guy sent over to "upgrade" the antivirus on my system. He's done installing the AV software, I reboot the PC, and the next thing I know RTVScan.exe is eating up 50% of my CPU. X|

I've found something similar with the AV software we use at work - the extra disk accessing required by real-time scanning just about doubles build times, especially when you've got 40-50MB pre-compiled header files....

I've gone round and round with our corporate IT gestapo over this particular issue. We've recently switched from Symantec Antivirus to McAfee. With Symantec we turned off the real-time scanning and did a full scan every night. In theory this approach wasn't quite as safe, but it reduced our build times from over 3 hours to around 45 minutes. McAfee has given the security goons the means to prevent us from turning the real-time scanning off. I did find a weakness, however. They let me exclude the entire disk drive from the real-time scan, which effectively neuters it. I wish they had investigated this further. I use NOD32 from ESET at home, with its real-time scan feature turned on, and it doesn't suck every last resource out of the machine. Build times increase only a few percent, and it doesn't hammer the disk drive constantly.

Start - Run - cmd.exe Then type FORMAT C: /Y and hit Enter. CPU usage will be down to 0.

        Cheers, Vikram.

Sorry mate. If I had it my way, I'd uninstall every last piece of AV on my machine. After all, there's IT with their gazillion firewall services to try and block any unsafe EXEs from coming to my machine. Then I have this habit of right-click > Open for all removable drives, so that won't allow any autorun type virii to infect my machine. I wish IT heard my woes X|

I got into a serious argument with several of the IT admins and decision makers at my old company about the use of Symantec AV. Verdict was that I was right, after a few hours of arguing, providing proof (that already was under their nose) off of the internet but they have to stick with Symantec. No sane reason was provided. I don't work there anymore.

Not sure, but can't find any schedule settings on the client. It has "File system auto-protect" switched on along with proactive threat protection. It seems to scan continuously but tends to slow things down more on fridays than other days.

I had to play a lot with different AV solutions some time ago, and I made a lot of tests, including a real spyware/adware/viruses. So IMHO the Symantec is NOT real AV – this is an application created to hide the viruses and to eat your system resources. The McAfee is really good AV software, but also is very heavy and difficult to use. The best choice on this stage is NOD32, with the shortcoming, that if you need a ultimate protection you should combine NOD32 with some anti – spyware program /scanspyware or something similar/.

                          1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Add and Remove Programes 2) Scroll down to find that yellow beast by its name. 3) Choose 'Uninstall'/'Remove' as is appropriate. 4) Go. Have a beer to celebrate the freedom of your PC.

Use another AV software or try to reconfigure the one you have. Move scanning to night and choose not to scan all the files (only executables and script) at realtime. Change the priority of the AV scanner.

I have not seen the 50% CPU usage with that software however I have seen it use almost 200MB of memory split across two of the services it starts. Sadly that is the antivirus that the University has a contract with and thus if we switched we would have to buy something ourselves.

go into the settings for the AV and read what is there and post it here. Once we know what it is doing we can offer advice. Running without AV is not an option here, and I wouldn't recommend it anyhow. However, knowing what you have and what you can do with it rather than just disabling it is a much better position to start with. :) Ours are managed on internet machines, so I can't tune them. We don't develop on internet machines.
